I'm looking to apply for the Spring 2010 program, but If I'm not earning credit and maintaining full time status as a student, what can I do about health insurance for the CP? The school I'm applying to doesn't accept credit for the CP.

I've read threads about this before, but I never understood the potential options.

I'm making the assumption that you are still under your parents plan? They really need to call and ask because every policy is different. Some will allow you to keep coverage because the CP is considered an internship, but if it's after you've earned your degree the situation may be different.

Will you be returning to school after the CP? Because my school gave credit for doing the CP, and as long as I was a FT student I was able to stay on my parent's insurance plan. Now, next CP is going to be different since I won't be a student anymore (I will be graduating this summer).

Yes, I will be under my parents plan, and returning to school afterwards. I will get in touch with my insurance company and see what the deal is. Thanks everyone.

Not that this helps or anything, but it would be nice if more states and companies adopt this policy. My dad is a state employee in Iowa and they recently updated their policy. The insurance now covers all state employees’ children up to the age of 25 as long as they maintain residence in Iowa. So all I would have to do is have my permanent address in Iowa and I would be good to go! I’m a big fan of this as a lot of students struggle right out of the gates after college graduation. It is also helpful for the students who don’t feel college is right for them. Maybe we will see more of this in the future!!!

my mom is a state employee as well in the state of TN, and as long as i'm a dependent under 24 I'm pretty sure I stay insured:)

Anyone know about NY? I'll have to phone my insurance company.

Heck yea!! Iowa is the place to be, well until I move to Florida. I'm currently in Cedar Falls attending the University of Northern Iowa were I am a campus rep for the college program. Before that I lived in Cedar Rapids for two years and attended Kirkwood. In fact Kirkwood is the school I went through for my program!

Yeah IOWA!!

I'm going to have to figure something out for insurance, since I will be graduated if I am accepted for Fall 09 (and thus won't be on my parent's insurance anymore).

Because I went down after graduation and was no longer covered under my parents' insurance, I had to buy short-term, catastrophic insurance (for emergencies only). Mine was pretty expensive - $250/month, there might be cheaper options out there. If you want to go FT with Disney keep in mind that it'll take 90 days after you establish FT (not CP) before your insurance & benefits kick in.

$250 a month? Could you have taken any online classes or anything? was that your only option?

I was 22 and completely finished with my degree. I think if I'd wanted to take college courses, for credit, I'd have to take a full load of classes, and I didn't need nor did I want them (and with the price of $4000 for a full-load semester, it would be cheaper to pay the insurance). I just factored it in as part of my living expenses - mind you, my parents took over the tab for that and my student loans when they kicked in in November, until I got a "real job" in FL the January after (and I definitely had to pay them back). It's all apart of the real world, and I'm grateful that my parents gave me the chance to do the CP when I probably could not have afforded it myself. And I didn't even have a car (at least until December).

That said, there may be cheaper options or you may be brave enough to go on without insurance, but this was my situation based on my parents' policy. I have friends who have lied about their student standing and gotten insurance from their parents' policy. It's all up to you.
