Can anyone give me any ideas of companies to check with for health insurance for a 24 year old in the state of Washington? I know there was a thread on here a looong time ago, but I can't locate it. Any help would be appreciated. :goodvibes

We got a high deductible plan for DD to cover her from the time she graduated Dec 09 until her teaching job started in Aug 10 from BC/BS. The college also suggested Gradmed.com

This was before the law went into place that allowed young people to be covered under a plan of their parent without being a full-time college student. Now, when DD#2 graduated in Dec 12, she'll be covered under DH's plan until she get a teaching job. Hopefully Aug 13. :goodvibes

I added my two oldest to our family policy when the law changed to allow them to stay on until age 26. One falls off again in February, but she has since married and will sign up for her husband's expensive insurance at work.

I notice that you don't live in the same state, but if this is your child, you can still insure him/her under the family policy. My daughter lived in another state and it has been no problem. They don't have to be your dependents, either.

Our 2, ages 23 and 24, have Anthem BC/BS for $81 a month. It was way more expensive to add them to ours as we were just husband and wife and to add them put us on the family plan. That plan is the same for 1 or 10 kids. No way. The single plan is meant to be short term which is up to 4 years but with the same benefits as us.

This is exactly what we have found. That's why we thought it might be cheaper to have him find his own policy. He lives in a different state than we do and I just don't know what direction to point him in to look for that policy that won't break the bank for him. A long time ago there was a thread that mentioned a few different places to get quotes for young adults, but I can't find that thread. Thanks for your input.

ehealthinsurance.com will provide prices from multiple companies for individual coverage. Even Blue Cross offers cheap coverage for young, healthy people in some of their individual plans.

If he is currently covered by a group plan, have that insurance company price out an individual plan. Benefits will probably be less but the premium will likely be way lower.

Be careful to read the benefits so you understand exactly what is covered. Many individual plans have limited coverage. The best thing about individual coverage for young people is that they are generally healthy and the rates are much lower than the cost of a group plan. You can also get a plan that covers accidents and injuries with little deductible since these are more likely to happen to young people instead of expensive to treat illnesses.

Many of our young healthy employees opted for individual plans instead of using our group plan and got rates under $70/month. Our group plan was $450/month at the time.

We pay $1200 a month. To bump up to the family plan our cost would be $2100 a month. And it's not that great of a policy IMO. Granted, we own the company so we pay full price but our emplyees pay 50% so that is still a good chunk of cash for them. $1050 a month with children, $600 for two adults. $2,500 OOP per person.
Look into the individual plans for young, healthy adults.
We pay 100% for plant supervisors no matter how many children bur we only have two supervisors and we only employ 20 or so people.

I would second taking a look at ehealthinsurance.com You can easily compare policies there.
