Health Insurance for young adults.

Tricare Young Adult is an excellent value-we used it as a bridge for my son between when he turned graduated from college and his coverage under Lockheed kicked in-it was almost the same price. and FWIW-the ACA only requries that the option to continue coverage under a parents health plan-not that that coverage be continued with out additiona premium. The health plan offered by my civiian employer ( a major defense contractor) already costs 1260 a month for family coverage-and then they want an additional premium to cover young adults.

I think the $175 is decent for Tricare coverage. It's 100x better coverage than a high deductible plan. I'm not a fan of high deductible health insurance because if the what if happens you're screwed. I got cancer at 23 so I just don't advocate for those kind of plans.

You aren't screwed if you have the $ put away for the deductible. If you can do that, they can be great (and I had cancer in my 20s too.)

I am looking into the same thing for my son. He turns 26 December 29th. We made the mistake of not looking thoroughly at his paperwork when he got his job after college, and left him on my policy until his birthday. They only have open enrollment every two years. At least it will only be for one year.

Check with HR. Losing insurance is a "change in status". I'm turning 26 this month and will be able to go from mom's insurance to my job's insurance with just a copy of the letter mom's insurance company sent me saying I was losing my coverage. We also only have open enrollment once a year, but any change in status (loss of coverage, etc) can allow for changes within 30 days of that change.

Guess it depends on the actual coverage and most people in their 20's don't have a ton of money socked away yet (I'm sure some do, but not many that I know in this economy). Usually the maximum out of pocket a year is higher on a high deductible. Most people don't have $15,000-30,000 sitting around. I know we don't. Luckily I was on military insurance at the time and my max out of pocket a year was $1000.
