HEADS UP! Norwalk Virus at WDW!

Oh wow! That explains why Katwalk's DH became so violently ill when they visited WDW a couple of weeks ago.

I always carry travel sized Lysol spray and spray all hard surfaces when I first enter a hotel room, including light switches, remote controls, etc. Better safe than sorry. There is also UV light that kills viruses that you could use!

Wow! Shan, I'll bet it's all cleared out by then. Hopefully! :scared:

Connie, I'll have to get me some of that travel-sized lysol. I've seen it in Wal-mart; however, I just didn't want to pay that price. Better to spend a few bucks now than to possibly suffer all weekend, right? :teeth:

Please, please, please...right now this is an unconfirmed rumor coming from one family's experience. We have no idea what their circumstances were.

Stomach bugs are pretty common and only Norwalk virus about a third of the time. Regardless of what type of virus or what happened to this family, the best thing you can do is the same thing you do to keep from getting a cold virus...wash your hands!

characterized by "nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. General lethargy, weakness, muscle aches, headache, and low-grade fever may occur. Symptoms may persist for several days and may become life-threatening in the young, the elderly, and the immune-compromised if dehydration is ignored or not treated."

I had the Norwalk virus (confirmed by the health dept) 3 weeks ago. It was NOT fun and I never want to get that again! We had a catered lunch at work on a Wednesday and on Saturday about 100 people from work got sick. Use lots of anti-bacterial hand gel and wash your hands with hot water, soap, and sing the ABC song while you wash your hands--that takes about 20 seconds and that's how long you need to kill the germs.

Oh, and of course we are staying at BCV.

Are you immune or something now since you had it? Maybe? ;)

I try not to be too crazy about these things. We went to Disney when Zack was 6 mos. old. It was the bad flu year and he was too young for the flu shot. I was paranoid before we went, bought lots of hand sanitizer, etc. Once we were in Disney, we kind of forgot about all that, had fun, and no one got sick.

Positive thoughts! Esp. since I am also at BCV! ;)

Don't forget it isn't just the Norwalk virus running around out there! Mersa is still a threat along with regular colds, flu and ordinary bacteria! You can safely and cheaply use the Lysol to protect yourself from the items in a resort, hotel or motel room from getting you. The maids just don't have the time to clean every single thing in a room, take less than 5 minutes and take care of it yourself. My special needs step granddaughter has a serious staff infection in her arm that she picked up at school. They are talking about surgically removing the staff from her arm because it recurs and isn't healing.

Look for single packets of wipes! You can toss a few in your pocket, purse or pack and clean your hands! Particular problem areas are hand rails! Don't touch your eyes, mouth or nose. Take extra care with small children and the elderly, and spray rented strollers and wheelchairs!

Also carry wipes with you to take care of the planes! They don't clean those at all....well, maybe once a year or so. Wipe the table and the arm rests and spray the seat if you can! Have you ever seen a woman change a baby on the tray table? I have.

Take care of yourselves!

Thanks for the heads up Shan! I'll have to and look for some travel wipes before we go. I have a large container of Lysol wipes but haven't seen a travel sized container before.

I guess I'll also have to think twice about letting someone else handle my camera. It's usually just DF and I so I usually have to ask someone else to take our picture.

Yea, really. How will I know??

This sounds like what hit me at WDW in early December.

Stayed at Dolphin and OKW but visited Beach Club & Yacht Club.

Took me out of commission for two days and I was washing my hands. Then I gave it to my wife:(

However, I was there during the "outbreak" and saw NO ONE getting sick, was not sick etc...

The DIS tends to make things appear worse or better then they are in reality. It's the same thing as "room upgrades", "poor housekeeping" etc.....

I was at WDW December 7-11. Stayed at the Swan and Dolphin and spent time at BCV and ate at Beaches and Cream. No sickness here. Returning the 8-18 of January and hope to have the same luck! Staying at Dolphin and BCV!

There are other alternatives other than Lysol. Yikes! That always scares me when I hear people spray it in an airplane that I may be entering. Lysol is a pesticide and can make you very sick. Please look for an alternative that is earth friendly and people friendly. They are out there. We use a botanical disinfectant that kills just as much as Lysol but doesn't hurt us. I wouldn't want my kids around Lysol if you paid me.

Our 4 kids are really never sick. However I remember a neighbor that had 5 kids that were always sick with something. Neighbors kept remarking how they didn't understand how her kids were sick so often when she "Lysoled everything." I heard how she would spray it on door knobs, and everywhere to help protect her kids.

I tried to tell her, but she wouldn't listen...... ;)
