Heading for DC

Yes I wish it was discovery cove but no it is the nations capitol.

2 days this weekend with DW and my DS9 paleontologist and DS6 Jedi in training.

We are staying at the Holiday Inn just off the mall, and are planning the natural history museum and air and space museum along with all the monuments.

Just wondering if there are any other “not to miss” items for an aspie family within walking distance.

The American History museum is newly renovated and reopened not too long ago. It sounds nice. There are other great museums down there too (National Gallery of Art, American Indian, etc.). Of course the kids might get bored with too much museum.

This weekend is supposed to be rainy - the cherry blossoms are close to bloom but not sure that they are out just yet.

Thanks for the info on the blossoms; I am hoping we get some breaks in the rain on Sunday.

Our older DS is a museum “nut” we generally end up dragging him out.

Make sure you check out the train room in the American History Museum. The exhibit is interactive, most of the models can be boarded, unless that changed with the refurb. My husband has family just outside of DC and even with all the trips we make, we always try to make time to check that out. I definitely wouldnt pass up the American History one, it's great.

Also, when you go to the Natural History Museum, skip the Hope Diamond. It's always a half hour wait just to get close enough to see it and it's incredibly underwhelming. Use that time to check out the extinct animal models or the dinosaur skeletons. My husband could plan your entire trip from our couch, he knows DC inside and out, especially the museums.

You guys will have a blast, DC is wonderful. I hope you get a long enough break in the rain to check out the mall! If you do get rained out, though, there's plenty to do in the museums.

I haven't been in a while, but the National Gallery of Art used to have a children's scavenger hunt/map for pieces of art. It was designed to get you through the entire museum but at a faster pace. It worked well for our family.

Man, I love the Natural History Museum. I haven't been to DC in 20 yrs. Is the Spy Museum on your itinerary? I've not been to it, but it would seem a must for aspies. Also, is it the American History museum that has the World's Fair stuff in it? There were very cool exhibits related to that. It was neat to see what each state wanted to showcase back in the day.

Crud, I just googled the museums and it was Arts and Industries I was thinking of with the World's Fair stuff. The site says it's being renovated. Anyway, there's more than enough to look at in Natural History and Air and Space.

Not within walking distance, but in Baltimore, the Maryland Science Center is amazing. It is my son's favorite place to go. 3 floors of hands-on science experiments.

We are home, and thanks for the info and suggestions.

The weather was ok (we never really got rained on) and the sun came out about noon on Sunday.

DS had a great time and was only minimally bothered by the crowds.

We did learn one thing; we are all suffering from the “winter out of shape” issue since there was so much walking, this was much more of a limitation than any “standard” disability issues. Time to work on this before WDW in June.
