I use Gain or Tide powder and Downy for fabric softener. In the summertime I put vinegar where the bleach is suppose to go. I learned a few years ago that it helps with perspiration stains and odors. It doesn't leave a vinegar smell to the laundry.
I buy mine at Safeway, but I just googled it and apparently they also sell it at Lowe's, Walmart, and Kmart. I actually bought it by mistake once, before we had our HE washer, when I just grabbed a bottle off the shelf when I was in a hurry, so it can't be that hard to find!
I wonder if it's a regional thing? I've searched and searched here, and not found it. We don't have a Safeway. But I hadn't looked at Lowe's - I assume you mean the hardware store? Didn't know they sold detergent. That will go on my list, thanks!
I've had good luck with Kirkland Free and Clear HE from Costco, but I'm not always planning a trip there when I need detergent, so I get the All Free and Clear too.
I take a cup of borax, a cup of washing soda and a bar of fels naptha soap. It all goes into a big food processor and comes out totally mixed up, the soap being in fine pieces. Then you use a tablespoon per load. Simple and works great!
I started using the Sears Ultra Plus powder just recently after getting a great deal on it a few months ago...it can be used in a HE washer and I haven't had any problems with it.
