He is a naughty cat.

We hang large individual jingle bells on the bottom branches of our tree. It actually works pretty well (presuming the sound of jingle bells doesn't drive you crazy.)

The cats play with the bells and almost never climb up into the tree itself (but I make no promises about stretching a paw w-a-a-a-y out from the arm of the couch to take out an ornament here or there.) And if they do climb, the bells narc them out, LOL.

We had to take our Christmas tree down because of one of our cats. She could not stay out of it and three mornings in a row we came down to find our tree topper on the floor. She and her sister are just now a year old and still have plenty of frisky kitten behavior, maybe next year?

Our last cat was a big black lazy senior fella who LOVED to lay under the Christmas tree - he'd cry & carry on when we took it down. We finally ended up just leaving it up until early spring at which point he would be distracted by looking out the windows at all the birds, LOL :) - he was the BEST cat we ever had - we miss him so much :(.

We usually have our tree up by now. But we got a pair of kittens back in May and I'm afraid. It's going to be quite something to keep the tree up.

When our cat was a kitten he climbed in the tree to take naps. The following year he attempted it again and was too fat and knocked the tree down. He now just lays under it. Whew!

Ugh, I hadn't seen it. It's certainly not very encouraging! We're supposed to bring the tree down today to test it out. I don't have much faith. Our last Christmas with a kitten was 2015:

This was mine as a kitten, just 3 months old.

This is what I came home to one day last year. He's in the right bottom corner, looking proud of his work. I've learned to not have any breakable ornaments.

He is now a little over 2 and hasn't done too much this year, other than hiding under the trees (at least he thinks he is hiding haha).

When I had a tree-climbing cat, we attached the stand to a big piece of plywood. That made it less likely to tip over

Just told my husband we might be building a base this year. Last time was 1985. We had a pair of young kittens then too and built a base of plywood to screw the whole thing down. That got too grungy in the garage so we tossed it some time ago. I'm not above making a new one again.
