I'm not sure if this will make you feel better or worse, but I'd say odds are pretty good that he's known for at least a couple of years, and has just been humouring you. I was mean enough to tell my parents as soon as I knew (4 or 5 - I was an extremely skeptical child), but I had friends who waited a while to break their parents' hearts.
