I'm sure that this has been asked before....

I'm going to the HDDR on a non-park day. I will have a rental car. What is my best bet for getting there? I am open to using Disney transportation if that is my best option.

Just drive to FW, park at the Outpost area and take the internal bus to Pioneer Hall.

Or, if you don't want to drive, take your resort bus to MK, and then take the boat over to FtW. No need to enter the park, and the boat ride is a very pleasant one. And it drops you a very short walk up to Pioneer Hall.
To return...if the park is still open, just reverse your steps. If it's the late show, then there will be buses that go to the various resorts right at HDDR for you. They won't be direct buses but they will get you there.

I would add: if you plan to partake of any of the free flowing adult drinks (beer, wine or sangria) at HDDR, go for the boat or bus.:thumbsup2

I find the boat from MK to FW to be a very pleasant prelude to the HDDR.
And as mentioned, other than the first show, there are buses right there to take you to your resort after dinner. Several resorts are on one bus, so it takes a bit of time, but it was not bad.
Enjoy.

I wouldn't exactly call the drinks "free flowing" and it would be hard to get drunk in an hour unless you pound drinks really quickly.
