Hawaiian Shave Ice w/ Mochi at the bottom ?!!?

DBF won't eat Spam so I haven't had it in ages...maybe I'll just get some and give it to the kids. They will probably hate it. LOL Might be worth it though.....and I so agree about the sodium content. One of the main reasons I stopped eating was my diagnosis of high blood pressure at the ripe old age of 35. I gave up many sodium heavy foods like that.

I am right there with you on the high blood pressure thing, Pixiewings. I have had to cut back on a lot of stuff that I used to eat because of high blood pressure and other health issues. I love ice cream but that is bad as far as fat AND sodium for me. I eat a lot of skinless chicken breasts now, because those are good for my blood sugar problems, but I can't get any that have too much sodium in them because of the BP! So I am basically doomed to a life of eating thinly sliced turkey breast sandwiches on whole wheat, skinless chicken breasts, bananas and drinking tons of water constantly. Of course, I cheat, but that is what I am supposed to be doing!

Our 7-11s here have teriyaki chicken musubi!! It's even better than the spam musubi. Coke Slurpee and teri chicken musubi - what a way to start your morning! (What? Nobody else drinks Slurpees at 6:00 am??) :rolleyes1

They have a lot of musubi varieties at 7-11. There's hot dog musubi, teriyaki ham musubi, spam and egg musubi, portuguese sausage musubi. I like the spam katsu version (it's fried breaded spam with katsu sauce in place of plain fried spam).

I'm a big spam lover ;)

To prove it, my mom bought me a shirt in Hawaii !!

if you want the sauce for the spam musubi, you can fry the spam in a pan in a half shoyu/half sugar sauce, or you can put it on hot rice and it's the bomb!!

the L&L drive thru near my house doesn't sell musubi's, but we always order a chicken katsu/beef stew combo plate. nothing like it anywhere else! is the katsu sauce in california the same as the one here?

I don't know.....we love Chicken Katsu, when we go to HI BBQ (we have L&L and Ohana) we always get the Katsu, the pork and the beef and then we share it family style. :) Oh and DD8 get the Siamin with no meat, only noodles. I know I probably spelled that wrong...LOL
Anyway, the Katsu sauce is brown and tastes good....LOL Is that the same? LOL Sorry, I've only been to HI once and that was about 13 years ago, I doubt I even ate any Katsu that trip.

I don't know either if the Katsu sauce is the same as it is in Hawaii. I think they kind of all look the same, but I bet it probably tastes better over there. MMM now I'm hungry haha !

I just want to go back to HI and have a real shaved ice and real BBQ! LOL :)

There's a place in Fullerton called Mocchilato that has shaved ice with fruit, syrups, etc, but I don't believe they include mocchi in it. They do have mocchilato, which is mocchi covered gelato. Very good! And non-ice cream mocchi items, too. But, not an easy place to get to from DLR. It think there's also one in Irvine, but it's not much easier to get to.

The one in Irvine would be my recommendation - it's probably 15 minutes away, without traffic. Take the 5 south to Culver (like 3 or 4 exits passed the 55 interchange). Exit turning right off the freeway and it's in the shopping center on the left hand side. There's also an excellent Persian restaurant in there, too - Caspian Restaurant.

It's not really Hawaiian Shaved Ice, but it's very, very good!

Great - now I have to go buy some Spam and give this a try! I have not had Spam since I was a kid :lmao:

Alright, I have been trying to get my head around this but am so confused! What is the difference between Hawian shaved ice and regular shaved ice? And when you say there is Mochi on it, is it just the dough stuff, or those big balls filled with icecream? I have been trying to picture this but just can't! LOL>

I know some places put mochi just by itself and not the ice cream filled ones on top. The one that I am looking for is hawaiian ice with a mochi ice cream at the bottom. I just want to try it because it sounds like a nice ending to the treat. Kind of like a sweet surprise. MMM.

this is from my favorite shave ice stand at waikele shopping center. you pay $.50 more to get these mochi balls. they add some in the middle, put more shave ice, then top off with more mochi balls. the blue color was blue vanilla, red color was strawberry.

OMG that looks good. It is almost 100 degrees here today and that looked YUMMY! I think I might pick around the mochi though, lol. But I would try it! :lmao:

It has been almost 10 years since I've been to Hawai'i but I remember LOVING Waikele shopping center. :goodvibes This thread brings back so many good memories! Most of my HI memories are not looked back on fondly!

UHHHHHH, I saw the thing about pinkberry! I love pinkberry! LOL but only in NY and CA. I get plain with pineapple on top. YUM. sorry off topic!!! I will probably be shunned or something for this, but I have tried Mochi (same brand you buy) and could not stand it! LOL. I got the chocolate kind. Someone told me to put the whole thing in my mouth, but those things are BIG! LOL. I think I expected them to be about the length of a penny, lol. Maybe is it an acquired taste?

I was never a fan of mochi and people would always bring it to school for things like Bday's. For me I think it was the consistency that I didn't like.
