Hawaiian Shave Ice w/ Mochi at the bottom ?!!?

It sounds like at Yamabuki, if they do have mochi it's like the mochi in your picture, Jasmine, sans the shaved ice... But still, it's still yummy! They have that brand you buy (we get that one too) at Trader Joe's. I've seen the green tea (my fav) and mango one..

We have a Japanese market here and they sell the mochi without the ice cream, and it's so so good. Ahh, amazing..

Speaking of mochi and shaved ice.. Do you guys have a Pinkberry up there? Or is it a SoCal thing? Pinkberry has YUMMY shaved ice and mochi.. Ohhh man..

I have to go to the market anyway because I want to make spam misubi (I love spam; I think thats a requirement for Filipinos ) and I don't have sushi seaweed, so I'll pick up some green tea mochis while I'm there !!

my aunt and uncle LOVE hawaii and they named their dog mochi and I still dunno what it is

technically, according to wikipedia, mochi is "a Japanese and Chinese rice cake made of glutinous rice pounded into paste and molded into shape". so wazowskiLOVER, the outside part of the mochi ice cream ball, is the mochi part of it. mochi itself is not an ice cream treat. they do sell/make mochi by itself (without the ice cream).

...and yes, i agree, i think it is a filipino thing to LOVE spam! LOL! cause i love spam musubi, too (or just plain fried spam with rice)! in fact, i'm gonna make some for our plane ride down to cali when we go to DL in october....yummmmmm!

BOO! I think the closest one to DLR is probably Hollywood.. (EDIT: So I checked on the Pinkberry website and it says the closest to DLR is in La Habra which is 5.something miles away..) You would LOVE IT! They give you this HUGE cup and fill it with the Pinkberry frozen yogurt and then they put shaved ice on top and some sweet syrupy stuff and then they pile on mochi, kiwi and some other fruits.. Omg, it's delish!

SPAM MUSUBI! My Mom just made musubi for dinner the other night!! I swear!! lol It was good!!! We ate it at this Hawaiian BBQ chain we have here (L&L) and she never had it there so I got her one and she loved it and went home and made it!

Omg, you're my soul mate!

Edit: Oh yeah, my Mom made mochi once. Maybe a couple months ago (shes like you and loves to cook/bake/experiment) and it was really good. She said she used rice flour and found the recipe on the internet..

I knew someone would be talking about spam musubi on this thread!!! Now I'm going to be craving some!! We've got an L&L in AZ but there's another place that's a lot better! But- they don't make musubi. If you find out where the shave ice/mochi deal is at DL let us all know!!

We know that the Mochi is served at Yamabuki in the PPH. Whether or not shave ice is served there as well is yet to be determined!

There is a Pinkberry that opened up in the Tustin Ranch/Irvine area right off of Jamboree and Barranca in the new District Shopping Center.

There is also a Mochilato in Irvine off of Culver and the 5. Oh my gosh, it is SOOO good! Haven't had their shaved ice yet - I am to addicted to the mochilato to try anything else!!

OK..what is Spam musubi..because I love Spam and am always looking for new things to do with it.

Spam musubi is essentially spam sushi, but rectangular. You press rice into a rectangle/box shape, put a slice of spam on top and then wrap with Nori (seaweed paper).

Our 7-11s here have teriyaki chicken musubi!! It's even better than the spam musubi. Coke Slurpee and teri chicken musubi - what a way to start your morning! (What? Nobody else drinks Slurpees at 6:00 am??)

I like the Spam Musubi but I get it without the Nori. I eat all my sushi without Nori.
And I LOVE HI shaved ice...there is something different from regular shaved ice and it's so much better. Maybe because you're in HI when you get it...LOL

I love spam & rice. I make a upside down version of spam sushi. Spam on the bottom, then a rectangular piece of rice on top.


Fried spam....yum. My wife bought Spam Lite by mistake but it tastes like regular spam. (she thinks I'm crazy when I photograph our food)

I agree about the spam lite. I think I'm just gonna stick with that since it tastes the same and it has less sodium. Lord knows you don't need that much sodium as they usually put in the regular spam !!!

UHHHHHH, I saw the thing about pinkberry! I love pinkberry! LOL but only in NY and CA. I get plain with pineapple on top. YUM. sorry off topic!!! I will probably be shunned or something for this, but I have tried Mochi (same brand you buy) and could not stand it! LOL. I got the chocolate kind. Someone told me to put the whole thing in my mouth, but those things are BIG! LOL. I think I expected them to be about the length of a penny, lol. Maybe is it an acquired taste?

DBF won't eat Spam so I haven't had it in ages...maybe I'll just get some and give it to the kids. They will probably hate it. LOL Might be worth it though.....and I so agree about the sodium content. One of the main reasons I stopped eating was my diagnosis of high blood pressure at the ripe old age of 35. I gave up many sodium heavy foods like that.
