We are going to Hawaii in October 2011 and would really love to stay at the new Aulina resort with our points. What do you think the chance with the limited opening of us getting a room in mid-October of 2011? We would be able to do a Studio or 1 BR.

I'm sure this is just speculation but just wondering what your thoughts are.

I will make a cash reservation if I'm unable to use points but points would be lots cheaper.

Thanks for your input.

Impossible to even speculate at this time. :confused3

That being said, remember that studios and 1 bedroom villas are usually the very first to sell out anywhere on a given date.

Hoping for some Pixie Dust for you so that you get what you want! :wizard:

My experience has been that 1 bedrooms are the last to sell out. However, if these "legally" sleep five or six that will probably make a difference. I can often get a 1 bedroom late when there are no studios open.

Oct is a fairly slow time for HI but being newly opened, it's hard to tell. I'd guess that at exactly 7 months the odds are very good.

Hahaha... I'd guess at 7 days odds will still be very good! Aulani is HUGE! Even more so when the other phases come on-line!

This year, there will be WAY more inventory than sold points. .. So calling day 1 of 7th month window. I vote you get it.. but I am just a Dis-addict, and not sitting at MS looking at availabilty.

:wizard: Here is some fairy dust.

Thanks all for the replies. I will be calling day 1 of 7months and we'll see. We would love a 1 BR Ocean View. There will be 4 in the room and with a 17 year old we need the space.

I doubt that will be the case but we will see. If it's that available, that means it'd be more of the same as SSR in it's affect on the availability for other DVC resorts. HI tends to be very popular but people tend to not go every year due to distance and cost.

Well if you listen to the DVC guides......it would be IMPOSSIBLE!

Recently on the Wonder we went to a DVC presentation and the guides exact words were 'If you want to go to HI than you better buy points there because there wont be anything available at 7 months so you will need the home resort advantage"

Do existing members actually fall for this ????

Good Luck and let us know how you make out at the 7 month window

I was talking to someone I bowl with, and she said that her and her sister were at the Boardwalk and talking to some DVC guide there. They must have been looking at information for Aulani and the guide told them it is already booked for the next 3 years. I was like, um I doubt that.

I would be showing that guide the door. You can only book 11 months out!!

Remember, until the inventory has a points sale behind it, it won't be offered for points. So if there are 10,000 points available to be sold (I know it's more than that, but this is just an example) and only 2,500 are sold, only one quarter of the resort will be available for points reservations. The other 75% would be available for a cash reservation.

So it doesn't matter how big the place is, it depends on how well it is selling to use points there.

And I'd like to bet that that new owners at Aulani will want to stay there as soon as they can using those Aulani points.

I found a link to make cash reservations at Aulani, but it seems to be showing only the non-DVC rooms (i.e. no kitchen etc). Maybe I am looking at the wrong place? Does this mean DVC rooms can be booked by points only (at this time)?

The number of points sold is not the determining factor. It is the number of points declared for the DVC membership that determines availability for DVC reservations at a Resort. For example, BLT has about 5,733,530 points. As of 10/25/2010, about 4,965,455 points (86.67%) have been declared for the Membership and about 3,950,887 points (68.91%) have actually been sold. Thus, DVC members can book up to 86.67% of BLT on any given Use Day.

Aulani is being built in phases, and Phase 1, due to open on August 29, 2011, has 1,753,533 points allotted to it. However, I don't know how much of Aulani has been declared for the DVC membership. DVD may declare the entire Phase 1 for the membership before opening day, or it may do the declarations in bits and pieces.

Sounds like something I heard a used car salesman say---Buy it right now, or the sale will end, hurry up, hurry up!

what are the peak months in HI?
Xmas to Easter is the top with Jan being less so. Mid June to late July are pretty close to that demand as well. The rest of the year is pretty even overall with a few weeks being outliers.

We're going to be trying for late February 2012.

It's not as in demand as Xmas, NY or President's week but is pretty high in demand. Given the specifics, I'd guess DVC won't be that difficult to reserve day 1 at 7 months out but there are no guarantees. You should likely decide when you want to go and then book your air if a good option comes along then make a cash back up reservation. If you can't do that, the other option is to see if it's available then book air if it is and abandon the trip plan if it's not. That DVC is in active sales, HI is so far and the economy should help you with this trip. IF you're looking at other timeshares you need to get your planning done and your requests in. Even if you're not totally set on everything, go ahead and list what you are sure about if trying for exchanges.
