That's what I did, to ensure availability. We ended up with Dollar, as they ended up being the cheapest. We were on Oahu for a week and ended up paying $250, including taxes for a mid size SUV, even the people checking us in didn't believe our rate!!!! I just kept using Kayak to check for rates about daily, and one day I got lucky with my low rate. Now, I didn't use any coupons/codes to get that rate..... I also wanted an on-airport place and didn't want to deal with a shuttle....... Good luck!
I booked with Dollar also for Maui. We are getting a Jeep Wrangler for 6 days for $300 (total). Same car is now $500 and we are 25 days away from arrival. I booked about 4 months out and kept cancelling/rebooking as it creeped down in price.
Alamo was typically the lowest but I have been seeing that's not always the case anymore. It seems in most markets their prices are 10 to 20 percent higher than Dollar or Thrifty.
Keep watching - especially the week before when Alamo deeply discounts in various areas.
