Having the guts to let my hair go grey. Update and photos on page 5.

I am 45 and letting myself go grey. I am hoping for the look like Carol from the Walking Dead... Now she looks cool! Why not try it and if you don't like it go back to dying it. Worth a go!

Since I do not watch Walking Dead, I had to look up who that was. Lol. When I was looking through Pinterest for inspiration for short grey haircuts, she came up quite a bit!

That's what I'm thinking, grow it out and get it cut and see what I think. If I hate it, I will color it again. Maybe even go with a totally different color, since I really am not only sick of dying it, but I'm also sick of this color/highlights, too.

Funny to read this. I am 42 and started getting grey in my late 30’s. I have very dark, above shoulder length curly hair. I wanted to see how long I can go without dying it. So far I’m still good! I’m lucky – my grey comes in streaks and is more silver/white than grey. When I wear my hair down, I have single strands all over my head that either glisten or blend in, and then in the front I have a bigger stripe of grey hairs that I think looks good when it frames my face (dark hair all around it)! I actually like the look, kind of like a crazy witch with curly dark hair with wild white streaks. From far away and in pictures it just looks like dark hair.

My boyfriend is in charge of telling me when enough is enough, time to dye it. :p
Actually, we talked about that. I told him to get start to get used to it, as I don’t see myself dying my hair. He's bald so he can't say much! :)

Eventually maybe we’ll get to the point where women wouldn’t even feel the need to dye their hair. Maybe I’ll be a pioneer…..

It really would be nice if we could get rid of that double standard when it comes to men and women with grey hair. In general men get described as handsome and distinguished with grey hair, and women get labeled as old, washed out and tired. There are many men that started going grey younger, I mean look at Anderson Cooper, he is very handsome.

OK - here's my story. Both parents went prematurely gray. Mom dyed her hair from her 30's until she was almost 80. (It didn't help that she is also older than dad, so she felt self-conscious about her age.)
Since, like most kids, I didn't want to do anything my parents did, I refused to dye my hair, even after it started turning gray in my early 30's. Since my natural hair color was black, it truly was salt and pepper hair. It is now about 50-50.
And yes, it is long.

Here's the thing - and not to brag - but I actually get compliments on my gray hair. Women, usually routinely ask me if my hair is "natural" and say that they really like it. So I guess I will keep it.

Your hair sounds pretty. :)

:)

Actually, I think some men look pretty bad with their gray hair as well as some women. You are correct that Anderson Cooper has fabulous gray hair. So does my stepfather. My boss and my other coworker, on the other hand, do not. My boss has chosen to color his hair and it looks good. My other coworker has not and he looks really washed out and kind of wilted looking (I've known him since he's had dark hair so it's real difference in his appearance). He just looks super pale and washed out. But he doesn't care!! Good for him. Anyway, that would be the kind of gray hair I would have.:D

I've been gray for about 10 years. It's the best decision I ever made. The expense and upkeep got older than I did! I'll never forget what one stylist told me once, "You can be gray if you go SASSY with your cut!" LOL

I'm in my 40's and so far I only have a few greys. I think up until I'm at least 60 I'll color it. I don't have a skin tone that looks good in grey. If i'm lucky I'll go white like my Grandmother instead.

Of course some men don't look good with grey hair.

People can look washed out when they don't have grey hair. I see people who wear the wrong colors for their skin tone and hair color all the time. Maybe if your friend wore a better color that suited him, and made his eye color pop, he might not look so washed out. :)

I generally agree with this, and I'm hoping it will apply in my case. :D

I recently saw a woman who was only about 55, and she has white hair, and clear ice blue eyes. She was so striking! Just gorgeous.

Good for you. I considered a blue for my hair... Cool right? My wife gave me a stare that was most chilling...

I'm 66 and until about 7 years ago I had colored my hair since I was 16. But I got lymphoma and lost my hair during chemo. When it grew back I decided not to color it again. It's a combo now of light brown, blond and a little gray. I keep it chin length. I get more compliments on it than I ever got as a bleached blonde.

I'm greying at the crown. It's coming in pretty evenly distributed all over. It's a lovely, shimmery silver, with no yellow undertones at all. So far, I'm letting it go to see if I like it. If it comes in the beautiful silver my grandma had, I will just let it and get a shorter cut. I'm 49...old enough to go grey.

I decided to stop coloring about 2 years ago. I love it, so much easier to maintain!

I posted pics here a few years ago:

I am 45 and stopped last year. It was getting to where I had to touch up every two weeks. Too much!

Growing it out was a mess, lots of hats, ponytails and headbands. So that was the biggest battle, but am so glad I did it.

Also I think the style of cut will be a factor. I used to have long curly/wavy hair, and gray it just looked like wild witchy woman  :lmao:

Before, about 1 month of stopping color:

Wasn't sure if anyone would be interested in an update. Got my hair cut today. I was a basket case and trying to kill time, because my little dog was at the vet getting teeth extracted. So, I needed something to do, I was a worried mommy, and decided to just see if I could go to Regis and get lucky as a walk in right away, and they did.

My hair is a bit weird on the top in the second photo, I messed it up putting on the dog's pouch, but you can get the idea. Also don't know what that big red mark on my face is on the third photo.

Anyway, I'm going to sit with it for a while. See what I think. :)
