Having surgery on Monday

Don't worry about the C-collar and sleeping...you will be so tired that it will not bother you a bit. The soft collar is made of a dense hard foam, very thick while a regular C-collar is made of thin hard plastic. Neither would be comfortable to you now but I promise you will fall asleep right away just from being pooped and the whole ordeal.

One of the PP brought a few things to mind...MY DH stayed overnight with me in the hospital to help me walk and get up to the bathroom without calling the nurse. We are both medical so he knew what to do. I was walking by8pm that first night and determined to not stay the 2-3 days that they told me to expect. As I said in the earlier post, I stayed less than 24 hours from my OR out time. Get up and walk a couple times the first night, it will help.

DH had to stand right outside the shower for probably the first 3-4 days. The first couple of days you will not be able to wash your own hair, too weak in the arms. It will be about 10 days to 2 weeks before you can dry your own hair. I was not home alone for anytime at all the first week. You will need someone at home with you to prepare your meals and help you with things at least the first week.

I was up to short visits with friends by the 3rd day and on day 5 my SIL came over and we lounged around watching movies. I did not ride in the car for at least the first 10 days. You will probably be paranoid that someone will hit the car and mess up your neck, especially if you live in an area that gets snowy weather.

Follow the Drs. recommendation to the letter. If he limits you to lifting no more than 5 pounds, do that. I did not drain cooked pasta the entire 12 weeks or pick up a gallon of milk (weighs 8 pounds). It was a couple of weeks before I emptied the dishwasher and then it was one thing at a time. No pulling heavy wet laundry out of the machine. I am convinced from talking to lots of people, the secret to a successful outcome is following Drs. orders. It's hard to wait on other people to help you out, esp. when one is a teenager complaining about doing so, but your future wellbeing depends on it.

:hug:Good luck:hug: and I'll check back to see if you have more questions.

I'm guessing that having button/zip-up the front tops would be wise to have on hand? Thinkning about my wardrobe, just about everything I own is pull-over the head. I can't imagine those being easy to get in and out of.

bendy straws for beverages?

Anything else I should plan to have on hand?

Oh I most definitely belong to the club! I had lumbar fusion L3-5 back in 07, so I'm doing the flipside tomorrow! :)

I love (not) the braces. Do you have a bone growth stimulator? I got one for my lumbar, don't know if I'll get one for cervical.

I have a feeling, and hope I'm wrong, that this won't be the walk in the park that my ns said it would be. I think they're going to find more going on in my neck than they think. Again, I'm probably way off mark.

Welcome to the back surgery club of 2009 :lmao: Mine was at the other end though, I had a disc removed in my lower back with spacers screwed in. My recovery has been slow, please watch like a hawk for infection and tell sick people not to visit you (I should have been less polite).

I'm currently sporting a very fashion forward back brace - someone forgot to tell the doctors here that you're not supposed to wear white after labour day ;) I say get some bedazzlers and bling up that collar you'll be wearing. :wizard:

I couldn't take the morphine unfortunately, started exorcism-style vomiting on day 2 after surgery. While it lasted though, the clicker was my best friend. Listening to my MP3 player got me through many sleepless nights, definately load up your iphone with music. Straws made drinking alot easier to start with.

Best wishes for a a safe and speedy recovery, please keep us updated!

went into surgery at 7:15. Everything went as expected, and am having much more pain than I thought I would. My throat feels like someone stuck a knife in it, and my middle back and right shoulder hurt really bad.

Oh well, no surgery is a piece of cake, and I'll be better for this one in the long run. Going to take a nap now.

Oh my gosh!! I can't believe I forgot to tell you about the sore throat! My throat was so sore for the first 4 days that every time I swallowed saliva in my sleep it woke me up even with pain medicine. I thought mine was so sore from swelling around the tube due to the surgery being done face down.

I guess the good news is you'll forget all about like I did. Glad you did well.. Hope you're felling better soon! Thanks for posting, I was thinking about you several times today.

Yes I remember them warning me my throat would be sore from the tube, my first hazy memory when waking up is of them rolling me on my side because I threw up when they removed the tube. I'm glad to hear you're through the surgery safely, remember to click! (I don't have a bone growth simulator btw)

Hey Jazzie, was wondering how you were doing. Glad to hear you've made it through the procedure. Take it easy feel better soon.

Well, last night I decided to take a norco instead of morphine iv. It really helped with the throat pain. I woke up for vitals about 1/2 hour ago and noticed it hurt much less. So now i'm waiting for my next dose. which should now be in about 20 minutes. Overall, i feel pretty good, but tired. Didn't sleep well due to discomfort, finding a comfortable sleeping position, and being in the hospital.

Came home today, much to my surprise. It hurts more now than ever before. They changed my meds to percocets, which helps more. They said wearing my collar is optional, but I've tried not wearing it, and I just don't feel secure enough without it. I feel like I have a lump in my throat the size of a baseball. My upper back feels like it's on fire. and, oh my, if I have to cough, ithurts so bad I could scream, which I don't, 'cause it makes it worse!

Wishing you a quick recovery:hug:

Yeah if you think coughing's bad, please do everything in your power not to sneeze :lmao: Hope the percocet is working!

I have a bone growth stimulator that I have to wear 4 hours per day. I can't wear it with my collar, so it will have to wait until later in the day when I'm not ready to doze off.

I call it my star wars necklace.

Hi Jazzielady, haven't heard from you in a while, hope everything is going ok with your recovery :)
