Having Second Thoughts

I've been out of work for awhile and I turned down an interview with a large company to accept a position with a local one and now I am wondering if that was a smart thing to do. The position I accepted is closer to home (so less commute time), but it was for less $$ than what we had originally agreed on and I'm wondering if I should have kept the other interview to have something to negotiate with. Did I do the right thing by saying yes so quickly? This position does not start for another 2 weeks. Should I contact the other company and see if I could still do an interview with them? Am I normal to be having these doubts? HELP!!!!

You are normal to be having those thoughts. It would not be out of the ordinary to call the other company but might be a bit awkward. For me, the commute over the money would be a big thing too. I'd rather be closer to home with a little less pay than having to commute, be farther away from home, to get more money that I will just be putting into my commuting.

I agree with December99. I would rather work closer to home for less money than have a longer commute. I know there are a lot of companies in Massachusetts that are projecting on having major downsizing, so to have been offered a job now is great.

Yes people have second thoughts about what if but was there a guarantee you would have gotten the other job. You could see if the other company will let you interview but it would send the wrong message. I would feel a little ackward calling but what could you possibly loose.

Don't knock local companies, sometimes they pay better than the large ones. (I can attest to that).

But what ever you decide good luck.

December99 & Cthia,

Thanks for your thoughts. I really do appreciate them. The other company contacted me again to make sure I was not interested, so I asked a few important questions and found out it would be a temp job for up to 90 days, with no guarentee of it going permanent. At any time during those 90 days the person leaving the position could come back at any time, as well as allowing the company that time frame to see if anyone internal would be interested. I said thank you, but professionally, ethically and morally, I could not in good conscience turn away from the permanent position I already accepted. Even though it is for less money, it is much closer to home (15 minutes) and the other would be a 45-60 minute commute (each way). Considering what kind of winter we just had, I know I made the right decision.

Thanks for being such good online friends. Now I need to do some shopping!! The place is business casual & I have pants & some shirts, but a few more would not hurt (and need those business casual shoes too)!:)

Thanks again!!
;)

You are more than welcome. Good thing you asked those questions. I think you made the right decision! And you are right - given the winter you all had, you never know what you'll be driving in!!!!

Good for you Terk-1.

At least they called and you were able to put your second thoughts aside. :D That would have been awful if they did not hire you full-time, especially when temps usually don't have any benefits.

I would say 15 minute commute is great. I would love to have that, mine is about 25 minutes and especially this winter having been the worst in a few years. I hate driving in bad weather as it is so closer to home is alot better.

Well you have fun shopping and buy lots of new clothes.

Welcome back to the working world!

:Pinkbounc :p :p
