I get up pretty early every morning but for some reason I just cant fall asleep at night???? I'm totally exhausted yet I lie awake for at least an hour. I try watching TV until my eyes hurt so bad I have to turn the TV off because the light hurts my eyes.

It's probably stress related. I just bought "Unisom". Anyone ever taken this before? We'll see if it works tonight.

I have 9 days before my Disney trip, I dont care if I dont sleep while I'm there.

By the way, I know its not a caffeine problem. I tend to stay away from anything caffeinated, especially later in the day or at night.

I can relate. I suffered from Restless Leg Syndrome something awful for years, and in the past year, I hardly slept at all. I finally found something that helps, so I'm sleeping much better.

I hope the Unisom works for you. It's so frustrating not being able to sleep - it's like you're the only one in the world who is still awake. Good luck - let us know if it helps. :sunny:

Did you ever think it could be you are excitied about the trip and you are having problems shutting down thinking about it?

I also am having problems sleeping lately. In my case I also get up very early, but I am constantly waking up then I go back to sleep for a few minutes then wake up again. Sleep for 10-15 minutes then wake up. I do this all night long. This has been going on for several days now. yes, I have a stressful job, but you would think I would be so exhausted I would fall into bed and sleep the entire night. Who can figure?

Unisom is one of the best OTC options, but have you tried Valarien root? It is an herb, actually it is the herbal Valium. I have a steel rod for a spine, so I can get hideous pain and have a hard time sleeping. This allows me to keep it under control.

Unisom does not seem addictive. If this continues, I would highly recommend you see a Dr.

maybe you should become master of your domain, or is it not be master of your domain...then sleep like a baby

I will let you guys know after tonight how the unisom works.

*** This is interesting, I think I will have to look into it...

I recently lost my job (that is a whole other story) I think this is why I cannot sleep. I usually would be the first in bed asleep,no probelm. Not the case anymore. It might be the Disney trip  but i doubt it. I could understand if it was the night before we leave, but this has been going on for a little over a week now.

Try this- a standard relaxation technique: You must focus on the procedure, even just the focusing may be enough to let you sleep, but if it isn't then the relaxation you achieve may well work.

Lie comfortably in bed on your back.

Think about your toes. Wiggle your toes. Relax your toes. Take your time. You are going to now progress up the body and relax it little by little.

When your toes feel relaxed, tighten your feet; relax your feet. Relax your ankles. Relax the bottoms of your feet, the sides of your feet, the tops of your feet.

Relax the lower part of your legs. The front, the back. Check that your toes and feet and ankles are still relaxed.

Relax your knees. the front of the knees, the back of the knees. Any time you aren't sure that you are relaxed, you can tighten and then relax the area. This will also help you relax even more.

Relax the upper part of your legs. Tighten the muscles in the legs. Relax the legs. Every muscle in the legs. The top of the leg, the bottom, the inside and outside. Relax from the hips. The entire leg and foot should feel relaxed. They should feel as if they are sinking down into the mattress.

You can see how it is going. This is called progressive relaxation. You work up your body relaxing each part one at a time. Relaxing thoroughly. Tightening and relaxing if needed to achieve greatest relaxation. Check through that each part remains relaxed. When you reach your head pay attention to the scalp, the ears, the jaw.

*yawn* I am getting sleepy just writing this.

Benadryl works wonders for me. I take some every night. My doctor said it was perfectly safe. Good luck. I hope you find something that works for you.

Valarien works wonders. I mix it with lavender and lemon balm and keep a sachet under my pillow. It's very relaxing.

Do you drink alcohol? That can keep you up at night as well.

ETA: Sleepy time tea works good, too.

I will take meletonin occasionally, which helps. Doesn't knock me out, but helps me to go back to sleep when I wake up. I bought valerian root and tried it once. It seemed to be good, but then I read that it can be a migraine trigger. I need to research that a little more. My migraine meds knock me out, which is one benefit to my daily migraines. Hey, I guess there is a silver lining.

Do you exercise? I find when I exercise just 30 minutes a day, I sleep so much better.

The Unisom worked but it took 1 1/2 hours to kick in then I was out like a light. I can always try other options, like the ones you guys are suggesting.

Thanks, I appreciate any suggestions :)
