Having Multiple Accounts Question

So me and my brother each have separate DVC memberships. We decided before the restriction change to add a contract through resale and we are splitting up the points. The rep told us that this would require us setting up a new account for this specific contract being that we are both on the deed for this one.

2 questions,

1. Does the one time point transfer still apply per year being that I am transferring from one membership to another?

2. If I were to transfer points from the joint membership to my personal membership, would I be able to book with the transferred points online or would I have to call MS to book?

thanks!

Technically and legally it'll be like 3 different owners, there will be 3 master contracts. Thus the one transfer per account will be in place. Historically they have been flexible with transfers between multiple master contracts of a single owner but there's not guarantee this will continue. And it's case by case where it makes sense to accomplish a specific goal like to round out a single night stay. I wonder if this is the best way to approach this though there are no perfect options. Could just one of you buy and the other "rent" from that person. Since both haves benefits it doesn't remove any choices. While it'd also be possible to change the current deed of one so they matched up (if the UY is the same), that's likely not the best option.

funny story about the Use Year. It was supposed to be an August use year to match all of our existing contracts. We later get a call and were told it was a typo and it was September. It was too late to change before the restrictions kicked in, so now we are stuck with September. I'm assuming that now rules out matching up to one of our memberships.

I wonder what the majority of people do in this situation?

It would make it impossible to match as a single master contract. I doubt most do partnerships with contracts but some do and those that do seem to be all over the place as far as the specifics.

We have multiple DVC Memberships, each with a different Use Year and MS has been helpful when wanting to use points from more than one Membership for a single reservation. Often, we have been able to do it by using points from one Membership for whole nights and then complete the reservation using points from another Membership for the remaining nights and linking the two reservations together (we were able to do this last week). On other occasions, MS transferred points from one Membership into another to simply combine all points for the reservation. In one case, this was after already using the once-per-Use-Year transfer to another member.

This is not an allowance found written in the DVC documents, but more of an accommodation to Members based on circumstances at the time.

In this case, the reservation was made during the same phone call. Otherwise, another call would have been required since the transferred points would be not be viewable online.

With situations like this, it can't hurt to make a polite request for MS to consider and see what they are able to accomplish.

The only times they've done it for us above the rules and the only times they've committed to doing so when we ended up not was when getting the points into a single account was the only reasonable way to accomplish the goal. A single nights reservation or for cash type exchanges where the points have to be in a single account to pay. I've only done a single cash exchange and it was for a 2 day WL hotel room but I've discussed with them many times over the years about DCL and the like.

As noted above, past practice has been to allow a member to transfer among memberships more than once per year when the member has separate memberships and when needed. That practice could change in the future, and you have an issue to which I have not previously seen an answer. The transfer you would want to make is not one from a membership owned by the same member but instead from a membership showing at least one different member. I have not seen in the past mention of multiple transfers being allowed (or disallowed) in that situation, so I am not sure it will be allowed even under the current practice.

As to making a reservation after you transfer points, in the past you could do it online only if the transferred points had the same use year as the membership or one of the memberships shown in your online account. If a different use year, the transferred points would not be shown in your online account and you needed to call to use the points in a reservation. I do not know if that has changed since the recent update of the site.

I've got two different contracts. One while single and one more after I was married. We are waiting to add my wife to the second deed, so we can add our kids also. So technically two technically separate accounts. I just call into DVC and they have no problem moving points from one membership to another. As long as your name is on both, you'll have no problem. However, I've only needed to do this one time. It seems that I just book both reservations and then link them. This has never been a problem.

Be prepared that this is one question you'll get a different answer every time you call. I suspect you'll be able to if needed but don't be surprised if you have hiccups along the way.
