Having issue with BBall coach...WWYD?

And you are right, every coach is different. My son's basketball coach was much more of a screamer and more intense, and his soccer coach was so much more relaxed. Moving to soccer when basketball season was over was quite a relief to him in many ways. I think you've done an excellent job of voicing your concerns, listening to opinions and experiences, and taking things into consideration. I know from that that you are a good mom, and your daughter is going to be just fine in the long run.

DD, also 13 was in the same situation for her bb season. She'd get to only play a couple of minutes here and there. This was her first time ever touching the ball so we were surprised she even made the team. Same situtation as yours, never won a game this season, all the starters always played, coach screamed...etc....One game the coach put in dd when there was 11 seconds left...in another game she didn't play at all. She never complained, just kept practicing, even on optional saturday practices. We kept coming to the games. She made her first and only basket the last game!!! Yahooooo!

But for next year if she wants to keep playing we bought her a bb hoop for the house, we're sending her to bb camp this summer and I'll be getting out there to play with her. I'm glad she stuck it b/c she had fun and she learned a new sport. I just found out she made the soccer team last night...now that's her sport, so she'll be seeing some play time there.

I'm glad she might stay on the team for the season! Good luck!

sorry to report that DD quit. Not what I wanted but it was bothering her so much that I decided not worth a battle. I believe part of it is because she is usually good at what she does, travel soccer, A student, Band, piano. She is just frustrated that this coach is not giving her a chance. Although I agree with playing your best players but I also wonder how are your 2nd tier players going to improve when not given any opportunity? What if your star player is hurted? She's my first child so I guess I have lots to learn. Thank you all who responded.

You improve in practice, not games so if they are working hard in practice/off season, that is how your second string or any one improves.

I agree with most of the previous posters, he sounds like a typical coach. He's not "yelling" at your daughter personally. That's just the way coaches coach.

I work in College Athletics. Our coaches yell and yell and yell ~ over other kids talking, other people talking, over all the distractions in the gym. Not everyone plays in all or any of our games either. They may get 5 minutes, they may get 1 in the last game of the season. They may end up replacing an injured player. You never know. And next year, who knows, she may end up playing in every game. Teams change from year to year.

Your daughter should really speak directly with the coach, letting him know how she feels. Seriously, it will not hurt, she shouldn't be scared of him. He's only a coach!!!

Personally I think there should be no "bench warmers" on any team. If the kid cant play then don't have them on the team, period.

If the coach doesn't like your kid your kid isn't going to get play time either. For most "higher" level coach's it's called testosterone and yes even some women suffer from it! Higher level just makes me laugh!

ok, let's look at it this way....
NFL Football or Major League Baseball or Basketball....... how many people are on the team? How many people actually play in each game? It's usually the same players game after game. NOT everyone on the team plays in every game. Sometimes, they never know IF and WHEN they're going to play.
