PAS-- Welcome back into the fold!:goodvibes :rotfl2: So excited for you! Precious pic of HRH. Will miss that chair dang it. My son, who lays his stuff all over anything he can find, said-- where am I going to put all my clothes? :rolleyes2

Gee honey, I dunno, um, the closet? :smokin:

:rotfl: Gotta love them boys! I was nervous that the kiddos wouldn't agree to GF without CL, but they surprised me. It's great to see the Grand love come back!! :goodvibes That chair was great :guilty: Ahhhhh change, you would think I like it :rotfl:

I have a quick question about RPC IPO. Our 180 day mark is coming up in 2 weeks. Does GF IPO usually contact you prior to your 180 day mark to see if you have dining requests or is it better to contact them?

So glad to hear about the renovations! We're hoping to honeymoon there this summer so it's nice to hear that they're putting in new carpet & wallpaper!
This will be our first stay at GF and I'm so excited!!

You probably will get the generic form, but I would go ahead and email them now just to introduce yourself :) Congrats on RPC!!!:flower3:

Congrats on your upcoming wedding! AND congrats on your first GF visit!!! :dance3:

So where are you leaving the wet towels? On the floor? Does the vanity area have carpet? Looks like a wood floor to me. I can't imagine leaving wet towels on carpet.

Yes, it is a wood floor in the vanity area. We put our wet towels in the tub when we are ready to have the room serviced. Hopefully they put in a wood floor that can stand up to water because it will likely come into contact with some, especially in the bathroom!

DisneyDreamingInMI - thanks so much for all the photos, and taking the time to answer questions.:goodvibes Sorry they weren't met with squeals of joy from many of us - I hope that doesn't detract from your enjoyment of the rooms and resort.

Do you mind if I post a couple of these on the first page, so anyone looking there can see what the new rooms look like?

No worries! :goodvibes We are loving the room and the resort and are just thrilled to be here! As with anything, some people will love the new decor and some won't, but we happen to love it! But as I said earlier, this is our first stay here so we have nothing to compare it to, as do many others!

Again, I'm glad I could share the pictures and help out with questions! Not a hard task when I'm doing it relaxing by the pool or on the balcony!!! :thumbsup2

You can certainly use some of the pictures. :goodvibes They are cell phone and iPad pictures. If you want better quality pictures, I can send you some from my regular camera once we are back home! I use the software on our home computer to download/edit them. But I told my husband that I'd like to stay here forever, so we'll have to see how that goes! :rotfl:

While no one has ever accused me of having good taste, I am starting to think I must have really horrible taste now, lol!

I do feel terrible for the Grand lovers that don't like the refurb though.

Awww, so sorry we've made you feel that way. Of course not, everybody likes different things, how boring would it be if we all loved the same color, the same food, the same resort! We'd never get a room, that's for sure.;)

....
I have a lot of things going against me for how I feel about the changes. First of all, I don't adapt to change easily. My first reaction is always to not like it and be slow to warm up- that goes for anything!!:goodvibes

The second is that I grew up with a mother who was an antiques dealer who specialized in Victorian Furniture. From the time I was two I slept in a massive 1800's Mahogany Four Poster bed with all the trimmings and curtains and tie backs. So I am really hard to please when it comes to what is considered "Victorian". And while the last refurb wasn't truly Victorian, it wasn't modern and that's how I feel they are taking the rooms with this latest change. Victorian was overstuffed, and ornate and luxurious and splendid-- it was borderline tacky!

This is more sleek and I'm not sure what look they are going for with it.
In another Hotel it works, but they classify it as a "Victorian" hotel and with the change, it isn't.

It just doesn't suit me, but I know that there are tons of people that will love it.

This is how I feel, too. There are many who will like it (except that horrible mirror :rotfl2:), I just don't care for it. If it were in Hotel Anywhere, USA, it wouldn't bother me so much. Being at the Grand is the problem.

I laughed at the "borderline tacky" comment! So true!

Although seeing the new rooms in person is the best way to assess the new decor, it appears that the refurbishment has fallen short of our expectations.

The debate over its new look has concentrated just on the room. That's not enough. All the reasons mentioned by those who approve of the new decor are valid; however, the new look doesn't add to the Disney experience. Unlike the former decor, guests knew they were in a room that reflected the architecture, design and decor of the building, a structure modeled after a late 19th century/early 20th century Victorian beach resort (for example, the look of Hotel del Coronado). But the new rooms have been essentially decorated in isolation, save a wall hanging or two. A more elegant look? Certainly. A room that reflects the "magic?" Unfortunately, not. Ironically, the new rooms' look would be more appropriate for the Contemporary.

No matter, though: we'll be back for our 26th stay in April. ;)

All the best.

This. You can't introduce guests to the glorious Victorian Main Lobby, then pull the rug out from under them when they open their room door and find something completely different. It would, indeed, seem right at home at the CR.::yes::

To all that love the refurb That is fantabulous! And I hope none of my grumpy comments have offended or will offend. It's that I expected similar to VGF décor. The Grand should be luxurious...BUT I prefer more whimsy. The Grand makes you feel like royalty, now it's a room. Again JMHO, I felt similar about the Poly refurb. I didn't love the old décor, but it felt Poly (if that makes sense).

That said, the rooms are less Victorian so maybe my DH won't kill me for CHANGING OUR RESERVATION TO THE GRAND :cool1:

The hamper was the best!!!!! I feel like once I am there, it won't matter we will be swimming or chilling on the balcony

Of course I emailed my TA before seeing the pics...BUT it's the resort I love. So it's all good. My heart sunk when I saw the pictures, but I know when we pull up to the Grand this August all the butterflies will return and I'll be at my happy place::yes::

....

My daughters are not happy the pink couch is gone, they said it's not a castle anymore BUT when looking at the grounds, and pool pics..they (and me) decided we would rather give up BC CL to stay at a non-CL GF room. So there you have it! I thought about saving up to do CL, but we have so much we want to experience this trip...CRT, Fantasmic, Illuminations...we will miss evening and dessert offerings. No one will want to leave the pool for afternoon snacks. And cereal and fruit in the morning...I'll pick that stuff up at Publix easy peasy...wait, who is this sensible person...:rotfl2: I got that great TA rate and the less I spend on vacation the less hours I have to work to pay for it :thumbsup2

....
I should have never tried to resist....

Happy 40th (mine is in August) The GF offerings are very expansive. WL CL is fantastic, and so is GF

Sorry your DDs are going to miss the couch and it now doesn't seem like a castle. But glad they still feel it's worth it to switch to the GF!

What an adorable photo of HRH!:cutie: And congrats on your change of resort!:cool1::cool1::banana: I hope you and the fam enjoy the resort, even without CL; we enjoy all levels at the Grand. Your reasoning is spot on - it's exactly what we do when we plan to be in the parks or just away from the resort in general for much of the vacation.:thumbsup2

So thankful for the pictures!

I too noticed the gold/silver clash. I've never stayed at the GF and am definitely looking forward to a newly refurbished room in June, but it sounds like I'll be missing out on some of the small unique touches that used to be there
For some silly reason, I was really excited about that hamper! ;)

Not silly at all - I'm really bummed about the hamper. I hope one of two things happens: 1) they have new hampers on order but they haven't arrived yet; or, 2) enough people complain so they need to add one as an after thought.:teeth:

I have a quick question about RPC IPO. Our 180 day mark is coming up in 2 weeks. Does GF IPO usually contact you prior to your 180 day mark to see if you have dining requests or is it better to contact them?

As pas posted, I wouldn't wait. I would contact them now by phone or email.:thumbsup2

So glad to hear about the renovations! We're hoping to honeymoon there this summer so it's nice to hear that they're putting in new carpet & wallpaper!
This will be our first stay at GF and I'm so excited!!

pixiedust: Very exciting, best wishes on your upcoming marriage.:goodvibes

This made me laugh out loud!;)

Yeah, seems like a lot of us are not bowled over...your apt description of what you expect in a Victorian "boudoir" was spot on, in my opinion! Oh, and I also join you in bemoaning the loss of the hamper, benches and the chair (tho all we did with that was to put our "stuff" on it...it was handy for that!) I'm concerned about the lack of storage now.

So my first response to the refurbished rooms yesterday was quick because I was in a meeting....now I've had more time to think about it.

It kills me to say it, but I really dislike the new rooms. As in...I really...really dislike the new rooms.

I think there are some nice touches, heck, I'd use some of them in my own house, but I think these rooms look nothing like what you'd expect out of the GRAND FLORIDIAN. The bed and bedding is lovely. I don't think there's anything Victorian about it though. The bathrooms are now lovely...but boring. The whimsical Disney touches of Tinkerbell and Mickey are gone (yes, the back of the chair is lovely, but I can't find much else Disney-like in the room). The armoire, the mirror over the daybed, the pillows on the daybed and the end table all look cheap...I swear I could buy it all at Target tonight (and that's no knock on Target...but I don't expect Target merchandise at the GRAND FLORIDIAN).

The bottom line is...for well over $500 a night...I expect better. It just looks cheaply done. I could be wrong (Lord knows I've been many times before), and it could be absolutely gorgeous in person. But I'm thinking of the lobby, the architecture, the hallway wallpaper, and it just doesn't go with this new refurb. The newly decorated rooms actually reminded me of a picture I saw of the rooms at Portofino Bay at Universal...a lovely resort, but not of the same theming as our beloved Grand.

I think maybe the color scheme is what's throwing me off as well. It looks so dark! I wonder if they simply replaced everything in that room that's red with a pale pink or even a pale blue, if it would make a huge difference. Meh, what do I know. Hopefully, as they finish more rooms, they'll tweak it a bit, and/or we'll get more pics that do the rooms more justice. But thanks again for posting DisneyDreaminginMI! We truly appreciate it, even if we don't all love the new decor.

grannyminnie - I know!:headache: They leaped from the frying pan into the fire as far as storage goes, right? Guests complained about the lack of drawer space, so they nominally add drawers, but take away so much more.:faint: (and the drawers ain't all that, by any means)

Scott MC - Agree on all points. I think you are exactly right about the color scheme, had they chosen something besides red for the predominant color it would have made a huge difference. I still would have found the clashing styles of furniture a problem, but one I could live with if the colors were more soothing. I think.;)

Here's a photo I found online of what I expected to see when the first rooms were revealed. A scaled down version of this, to be sure, but the overall feel and color scheme. I would still have wished for more pattern, but THIS would have spelled luxury to me.

Well, just so you know...the shower curtain at the GF Villas can be purchased at Target. I know. My sister bought it at Target and it's hanging in her bathroom. When we saw that the Villas had the same shower curtain (exactly, exactly the same), we just cracked up laughing! :rotfl2: Maybe Disney bought the same fabric in bulk, don't know, but it's the same shower carpet (I knew there was some deeper meaning into why I love Target...:lmao:).

I posted before about how the rooms didn't look Victorian to me (maybe it was a posting earlier in this thread, can't remember) and I was told that Victorian doesn't necessarily mean fussy, and over the top, etc. Victorian is a certain time period and there are various styles that fit within that.

I do think the rooms are very beautiful (not crazy about so much red), and they very well might be 'period correct' (goodness knows I don't have a degree in interior design), but I really do miss the rooms having a touch of Disney whimsy...touches that make me know I'm at a Disney hotel...teacups on the pillows like before...maybe some Mary Poppins touches, or maybe a tie in with the resort lobby decor (btw, I'm not a fan of that peachy-rose color either:) ).

What I do know is this. In the 'grand' scheme of things in life (pun intended), I can't complain about nice new interior furnishings.

I still love the Grand, it's just a happy place for me at Disney.

Some final intelligence from my visit:

Desk and nesting table:

This box CLEARLY shows there is supposed to be a nesting table. I am hoping that maybe the rooms were not loaded with everything before they started opening up the rooms for guests. Crossing my fingers as well for a padded bench at least....too.

As it stands now, I am seriously considering switching my reservations back to the Poly for July. The pool renos have been pushed off until August..ish and I am watching a current info thread that states that CCs will be closed from March thru June which means they will probably have a limited menu over near Tangarooo Terrace (sp?) during that time. If pool and CCs are open in late July....my friends, I will be next door curling up in the padded armchair with ottoman resting my adult beverage on the drum sidetable while my children are using the nesting table to draw or spread out their electronics....::yes::

Well after staying twice at gf then moving to VGF we felt the gf was old/dingy.

I LOVE the new decor:goodvibes

It's a nice mix of modern and Victorian.

Remember they always add some stuff later and will look better in person.

I just don't get why the powers-that-be chose to eliminate the Disney touches~

I was wondering the same thing. Every resort needs a refurb every so often, but it's sad when the refurbs mean all of the Disney touches are taken away in the process :(.

but I still miss the theme tied in with a disney character. Mary Poppins? Alice in Wonderland? Something?

I feel the same way. I'm all for updates, but keep the Disney touches in a DISNEY resort ;).

the renovations are just so----- cheap looking. To me it looks like a run of the mill Marriott property if I'm being honest. Where is the plushness that the Grand should exude? It's their Flagship Resort, it shouldn't be stripped down, and frankly, it is.

None of the furniture seems to go together. It's just sort of a mish-mash of stuff and the modern silver embellishments does not go with it. Even the GF on the pillows is gold; the GF emblem has ALWAYS been gold. The silver looks out of place and modern-ish in what should be a gilt Victorian setting.

It's just honestly really disappointing to see. What they have done to the Grand is simply…. Not GRAND.

ITA :thumbsup2.

This is more sleek and I'm not sure what look they are going for with it.
In another Hotel it works, but they classify it as a "Victorian" hotel and with the change, it isn't.

This is my feeling as well. It just doesn't fit the GF's style, IMO.

The debate over its new look has concentrated just on the room. That's not enough. Ironically, the new rooms' look would be more appropriate for the Contemporary.

I agree that the rooms should reflect the resort design, which like you said, this does not. It's funny you mention the look would be more appropriate for the CR because that's exactly what I thought when I saw the silver mirror over the daybed and the nightstand, neither one of which go with the GF theme (which, like k&a&c'smom said, if you can call it a "theme" anymore :().

That said, the rooms are less Victorian so maybe my DH won't kill me for CHANGING OUR RESERVATION TO THE GRAND :cool1:

My daughters are not happy the pink couch is gone, they said it's not a castle anymore :confused3 BUT when looking at the grounds, and pool pics..they (and me) decided we would rather give up BC CL to stay at a non-CL GF room. mickeynutYour quote disappeared  I am with you, my first experience at GF was 2011, and I LOVED the décor, time to insert at HRH pic...she's so little

Love the pic.....HRH is adorable :cutie: (as are all of your kiddos :goodvibes).

Congrats on changing to the GF :yay:. We've stayed at the BC and although that is a nice resort, it's hard to beat the Grand as it's such a beautiful and relaxing resort :cloud9:.

Will miss that chair dang it. My son, who lays his stuff all over anything he can find, said-- where am I going to put all my clothes? :rolleyes2

Gee honey, I dunno, um, the closet? :smokin:

This cracked me up because I have 2 boys and I know exactly where you're coming from :rotfl::rotfl:.

I have a quick question about RPC IPO. Our 180 day mark is coming up in 2 weeks. Does GF IPO usually contact you prior to your 180 day mark to see if you have dining requests or is it better to contact them?

Congrats on booking RPC. As pas130 said, you can contact them to introduce yourself :). RPC is amazing.....you're going to love it.

So glad to hear about the renovations! We're hoping to honeymoon there this summer so it's nice to hear that they're putting in new carpet & wallpaper!
This will be our first stay at GF and I'm so excited!!

Congrats on your upcoming wedding and your first GF stay :goodvibes.

We put our wet towels in the tub when we are ready to have the room serviced. Hopefully they put in a wood floor that can stand up to water because it will likely come into contact with some, especially in the bathroom!

This is what we do, too, as they are out of the way but also not getting the floor damp. I was thinking the same thing about the wood flooring and thought it was kind of silly to put that in a bathroom area :rolleyes1.

If it were in Hotel Anywhere, USA, it wouldn't bother me so much. Being at the Grand is the problem.

This. You can't introduce guests to the glorious Victorian Main Lobby, then pull the rug out from under them when they open their room door and find something completely different. It would, indeed, seem right at home at the CR.::yes::

I agree 100% :thumbsup2.

I also join you in bemoaning the loss of the hamper, benches and the chair (tho all we did with that was to put our "stuff" on it...it was handy for that!) I'm concerned about the lack of storage now.

I loved the bench too.....that being gone is just one of the many things I'm going to miss with the new decor :(.

It kills me to say it, but I really dislike the new rooms. As in...I really...really dislike the new rooms.

I think these rooms look nothing like what you'd expect out of the GRAND FLORIDIAN. I don't think there's anything Victorian about it though. But I'm thinking of the lobby, the architecture, the hallway wallpaper, and it just doesn't go with this new refurb.

All of what you said is exactly how I feel about the new look. It all centers around the Disney touches for me and that they took out the victorian feel of the rooms. Like I've said in previous posts, it is nice that the rooms are being redone because it was time for updates, but they could have kept the fun and whimsical things and still made it a luxury room, IMO.

Here's a photo I found online of what I expected to see when the first rooms were revealed. A scaled down version of this, to be sure, but the overall feel and color scheme. I would still have wished for more pattern, but THIS would have spelled luxury to me.

Now that would be a great room for the GF ::yes::.

I really do miss the rooms having a touch of Disney whimsy...touches that make me know I'm at a Disney hotel...teacups on the pillows like before...maybe some Mary Poppins touches, or maybe a tie in with the resort lobby decor

I think this is my major hang up. There's no Disney touches that set the GF room apart from an ordinary hotel room :(.

Not sure what to think about the new decor....I like it and I don't. DD definitely does not like it. Maybe we'll miss the refurb at RPC when we go. Regardless, I'll let it be a surprise for my husband and see how he reacts to the change.
