Did anyone do this? I am seriously considering asking my uncle or DF's uncle (who helped raise him) to get ordained and marry us! I think it would be great to have someone who is really special to us marry us rather than someone we have never met. My only concern is the process of getting ordained. I deff. do not want to ask either of them if it is a lot of work and a long process, they both are busy. Does anyone know how the process works?

My mother's boyfriend of 5 years whom we have become really close with became ordained in Florida online! He is also very busy working constantly and surprised us with his certificate last month :goodvibes
I also find it incredibly special to have someone who is special to us marry us. I will find out the process that he had to go through and will let you know! BTW, this saves you the $200+ to hire someone!!! :thumbsup2

My dad just got ordained for my brother's wedding, we realized 3 weeks before the wedding (which was last weekend) that my brother and his wife never bothered to find someone to marry them:lmao: My dad lives in FL so he got ordained online with Florida but it was legal for him to marry my brother in MI as well. He had to pay an extra fee to expedite the process but it definitely didn't take long. It only cost about $40 with another $30 to speed up the process. Now we are planning to use him for our Dec wedding as well, it is so much more personal to have him marry us (not to mention the $ it's saving:thumbsup2) The site he used is www.themonastery.org- it's through Universal Life Church. Hope it works out for you!

We are having my dad marry us too. But he is just becoming a notary of the public as we are catholic and didn't want a minster. Hope everything works out for you.

We are having my brother-in-law become ordained in order to do our ceremony. If you have the Passporter's Disney Weddings e-book, they recommend two online organizations that you can do it with that are actually free.

My DF's step father is marrying us!!! We are really close with him and so excited to have someone in the family marry us. It really wasn't "us" to just pick someone random to do it, so I think it's a great idea. It wasn't a long process at all for him...he did it all himself and just told us when he finished with it!

Getting "ordained" so you can perform a ceremony is perfectly legal in the US. However if you are religious you might want to check with your local church regarding the ceremony. The marriage might not be recognized. I can't speak for other faiths but I know a Universal Life Church service is not a recognized marriage in the Catholic church. Also if the person who obtained the ordination and performed the ceremony is Catholic they could be excommunicated. If you aren't religious then no harm/no foul. The state will recognize your marriage and that is all you need.
You'd be safer going with a notary republic or talking to your church before you get married by a someone without a mail order ordination. As far as Universal Life Church not only are they are not a Christian church- they might not be recognized by any faith other than themselves.
This is not meant to flame anyone or start a religious war. The issue only affects someone who is already a member of a church and even then only if they want their church to recognize their marriage... and even then only potentially.

Good thing we're not Catholic:rotfl: My dad said he used this site bc it was the first one he found that he could verify was legal for him to marry in MI- he was on a bit of a time crunch. When I talked to him last night he said he's going to become a notary public before our wedding as well, I wasn't sure why but this is probably it. Either way doesn't matter to me, I'm just happy he's going to marry us!
