Have you signed your Organ Donor card?

Even if you put it on your license, and even if the family knows, it won't matter if they say no. The only way to make sure 100%, at least this is what my attorney told us, is to have a living will. In that document you spell out what is to be done when you die. Ours state organ donation - all useable organs, and cremation. He told us that the license thing is a nice gesture, but it is not a legal document. I am glad that we did it, and I hope this tragedy brings more donors into the networks. This may not be true in all states as far as the license thing, but all states recognize living wills.

"Don't send your organs to Heaven, Heaven knows we need them on Earth" see on the National Organ Donor bumer sticker

Yes, and my family knows as well.

Yes, yes!! I'm encouraged by the positive responses on this thread. I never imagined I'd have such a personal involvement with organ donation but I am grateful every day for the mother in Kansas who so generously donated the heart of her 6 month old son to my baby. Its been going strong for almost 14 years now. We have been so blessed!!!

:D

Liz, I had no idea!!! I'm all teary now. I just noticed your tag today but didn't know that your life had been blessed by an organ donor. And God bless those parents that lost their child but he lives on through your son.

Im in Texas too so its not on my DL but my family knows I want to be an organ donor. Every now and then I remind them so they will not forget. DH and kids will do what I ask, if it was up to my grandmother, she would not. Im not sure why but glad the drs wont be asking her. I never could understand why everyone doesnt donate. It didnt make sense to me people suffering and dying when it could be avoided.

<font color=navy>I also plan to be an organ donor. The kids already know that's what I want, and then they're to cremate me & spread me over Yosemite (even if the priest says I'm supposed to be buried! :p ) I also donate blood whenever I can. We'll be having a blood drive at our church in April. :)

Signed and family aware and its in my healthcare proxy.

yep, dh and i both have. :)

dh's stepbrother is alive today b/c of a heart transplant he had, so it's something very important to their family. :)

Here in PA it's right on your license! It's on mine!

My family knows to let them take whatever they need. My brother wants his organs donated and the rest of his body is to go to a medical science facility.

Well to be honest... I have not gotten that far yet....although I know it is the right thing to do...for some reason it upsets me and I wish I could work through it... I am going to continue to read here as Liz's post touched my heart..........I know my children are organ donors....I am on the bone marrow list.. but I am having trouble committing to this one....and of course, this is a personal decision that no one can make for you.. Bravo to all of you who have made that commitment.

It's checked on my license and I also have a card. :) And my DH knows about my wishes, too.

My DL states that I will be an organ donor. My DH knows as well as my children. I also want to be cremated, my ashes spread on Mackinac Island. (Don't tell anyone though, don't think it is legal up there)! ;)

Glad to see so many people will donate.

I figure I won't need them when I am gone, put them to use for someone else.

Yes, DH and I are both signed up. DS is too. DD Amy isn't so sure, but she is young and tears up when we even talk about anyone dying. She is so loving that I am sure she will come around when she is older.

Bravo to all of you who are willing to be donors. To me your body is like an old car once you have died. You no longer need it to cart you around because you have a new vehicle. Why would you not want to share some of the old parts? If you don't need it, let someone who does need it have it. Makes sense to me.

I am signed up to be an organ donor. This is a great reminder to let our loved ones know our wishes. God bless those of you who have been fortunate enough to have benefited from donation, and prayers and {{{hugs}}} to those people who have had to make the decision to make a donation.
I am a platelet donor, also. My MIL couldn't understand why I would want to donate platelets voluntarily. I asked her how she would feel if one of her grandchildren were seriously ill and no one stepped forward to help them, and I think she understands now. It doesn't bother me to give blood, and it makes me feel good that in some small way I can really make a difference in another person's life.

I am a organ donor on my licence...have been since I was about 18. I will not need anything where I am going, and I too have no interest n being buried, so cremation all the way. I have it in my will, and have spoken to my family about it. Liz, Michelle and any others you are all blessed...hopefully when it is my turn, I can help someone like you guys :)

We are all organ donors, dh and I have it checked on our licenses and we have even spoken about it with my oldest DD , she's all up for donating her organs god forbid anything happens to her.
I'm the relative of a liver transplant recipient , and as Glo said, we don't need any organs where we are going.

This is so reassuring to me :) To read all of these positives posts!

we just had a huge discussion about this on the freebie board and it was terible, apparently someone quoted a magazine article that said horrible things about donors that the family would be charged etc. which is TOTALLY FALSE!!!

Anyway, people were all up in arms until we brought in so many articles that proved the other one wrong.

I think you all know where I stand on this issue, I lost my daddy while he waiting for a Heart Transplant, I am an advocate for donors and donor information. It is so nice to hear about informed people making informed decisions!!

We were part of donors groups when my dad was waiting. I was amazed at the stories!! People who were at deaths door and were saved by the selfless gift of a stranger! All of the children who would have lost parents, the parents that would have lost children and it was all prevented because someone cared enough to give something they didnt need anymore.
I know it may seem "creepy" to some and I totally understand that, but to the 75,000 people waiting for organs today and the families of the 17 who will die tomorrow while waiting, there is no greater gift or no greater love.

When I was in High School a friend of mine was killed in a car accident her parenst donated her organs and at the memorial service they read the letters from the recipients families. It was AMAZING!!! I think it was 14 people whos lives had been saved or improved by their gift.

This IS a very personal decision and I appreciate all of you who are donors or are considering it.

You never know how many lives you will bless or how your selfless gift will affect the world!

Im sorry this has gone on so long this is just a subject that to me, like Liz, hits very close to close to home!

in Answer to your question, YES Im a donor as is everyone in my family.
