You can be a part of the settlement against the music companies and distributors for illegal price hikes. All you have to do is have purchased a music item between 1995 and 2000.

You can get your name on the list by clicking here. Only 30,000 people have signed up, and they estimate they can pay claims for many millions more than that.

Happy refunds!

Yes, this is on the level. It was on my news tonight, and I found the link on my news companies web site.

If you don't believe me, read it here on snopes.com

This one is for real

Thanks for the post, Jeff!

My husband has been "reminding" me to register. He'll be glad to know I finally did it. :D

Wow, great find. My DH and I both put in for it. I wonder what the totals are up to? Oh well, even if we don't get anything, the money will go to charity which is OK too. :D

The cash paid by the Defendants, after the payment of attorneys' fees, litigation and Settlement administration costs,

Everybody will get $20 and the lawyers will get millions.

why would they ask the last 4 of your social security #? I don't like that...

Sorry, but unless something has changed in the last week, I think this is a scam. I read the legal documents related to the suit just last week, and the settlement that was to be certified did not appear to include ANY settlement to consumers. Settlement was to cease and desist the practices and pay all legal and notification fees. Generally in a lawsuit of this type, and this was indeed the way the disclosures read, you have to opt OUT of the settlement not IN. My initial reaction when I read the documents last week was how the heck they would ever be able to certify the members of the class, and the answer was that there was no money for consumers as far as I could tell.

Apparently someone checked it out and it is true, but the settlements are likely to be less than $5.

I was wondering whether or not my kids are also eligible. I know that they have purchased their own CDs during the period of time covered by the settlement. I didn't see anything on the website that stated any age requirement.

TC, you can get the payout if:

You are a person (or business) in the United States, its Territories, or Possessions, AND you purchased prerecorded Music Products from one or more retailers, AND at least one Music Product was purchased by you between January 1, 1995 and December 22, 2000.

also:

Yes, minors are entitled to file claims.

The link above is the same link from the North Dakota Attorney General's office, so I do think it is legitiate. The questioning of the last 4 digits of the SS number had me worried too

According to snopes.com, "the information is necessary in order to distribute the payment checks and ensure that no one files more than one claim."
:D
