I have seen a ghost and it freaked me out. I can not handle caffeine and I always drink non caffeine soda. We were staying at a beautiful country inn for the weekend. While having dinner at the inn, I was drinking tea. Since I do not usually drink tea, I did not realize that this tea was loaded with caffeine. I could not sleep that night. I tried taking a hot bath, reading in the sitting area and just laying awake with my eyes open and closed and I was not even drowsy. Well, I had the sitting room light on and the door was slightly ajar to the dark bedroom. I wanted to state that I had not been drinking. While laying there, this figure appeared in the doorway and kinda floated into the room. It was a female and she was wearing a long white gown type thing. She was not threating, but I was scared. She kinda floated towards the bed and at that point, I threw the covers over my head. When I peaked out she was gone. I awoke DH to tell him about it. The next morning a staff member asked if we had a good night. I was not going to say anything about the ghost, but my DH said that I saw something. The woman said, "Oh, you saw her". Apparently, I was not the only one to have seen this figure. They even know her name. Has anyone else had this type of experience?

Well, I haven't actually ever SEEN a ghost, but I've heard them before.

I lived in an old house in Germany that had been converted into apartments--3 floors with one apartment on each floor and a padlocked attic at the very top. I was the only one there--all my neighbors were in my husband's unit and they were all out of town. Our front door was locked and there was no one else in the building.

I was sitting in the living room when suddenly I heard several people running up the stairs at full blast, then I heard the attic door slam (it was a different kind of door then the rest of them).
I went outside--went up and down the stairs, up to the attic--the door was still padlocked--no one around. Several days later, I asked a cleaning lady who came in once a week. She told me that people had been hearing that for several years--Nazis going up to look for Jews in the attic. I heard the footsteps several different times before I moved out.

Also, right after my dad died--I had a picture of him from when he was 16 on top of my entertainment center. It had irritated him for the last couple of years and he was always after me to take it down. I was upstairs crying and really missing my dad and DH was in the basement--the picture was on the main floor. No windows were open. Suddenly there was this loud crash. I ran downstairs--dh ran upstairs. We couldn't figure out what the heck it was. Then I realized it was Dad's picture. On a big entertainment center with about 8 picture frames in a row. His was in the middle and it was the only one to fall--and it didn't just tip over, it was all the way on the floor. I knew that my dad had finally gotten that picture down!

I saw a ghost once, and it was a terrifying experience.

I had summarized the expereince once for another message board. Here it is...

What was it : A humanoid ghostly shape
Where did it appear: Windows, Doorways only when I was the only living thing AWAKE in a given room
Effect on me : What seemed like temporary paralysis/ not sleep paralysis
Time/Age : When I was 17, the summer after I graduated from high school
Duration : 2 months or so

Ok, so I first saw this thing at a hotel in rural Vermont (I forget the name of the hotel...it was one of those places where families go with their kids a lot in the summer). I was with my family (mom, dad, younger brother who was 12 at the time). I was asleep on the floor near the door of the room. I'd been listening to Pink Floyds the wall on my Discman and had fallen asleep. Suddenly, around 3 am or so, I was jolted awake when my cd player kicked back on with the song that goes "You better run like hell" . Except that rather than play the whole track it just kept skipping to that line. It was freaky. It was like a record skipping, not a cd. I looked up and in the doorframe was this ...thing. It had no facial features and just looked like a looming, ghastly humanoid shape. It was larger than a human though. I felt like it was staring at me but I couldn't move. I couldn't do anything but stare at it terrified. Then I heard my brother cough and stir a little and my cd player shut off again. I was able to move and ran over to where he was sleeping on the other side of the room and curled up with him and I think I stayed awake all night.

The next week back at home, I saw it again in my bedroom window. The same feeling of horror swept me and I couldn't move. It stopped when my dog came into the room.

The next day I was at my friends house. We were sitting on his bed listening to a cd or something and he was sort of leaning against my shoulder falling asleep. All of a sudden I felt the heaviness of when someone falls asleep and they sort of , I dunno, just feel heavier on you. Seconds later the thing appeared in his window and I froze until my friend woke up. This guy was really into paranormal stuff so I told him. He said he was going to talk to one of his friends and see what they thought it was.

The next day my boyfriend at the time, who was also really into supernatural stuff was over my house and we were watching tv in my parents basement. He was determined to catch a glimpse of this thing and so we tried to "trick it" by having me pretend to be asleep. Well that was dumb cause nothing happened. I guess you can't outwit the dead? Anyway, eventually he gave up. That night it appeared in my window. This time I was able to move and I moved to my parents living room couch. It appeared in the doorway leading to the outside. This time my dog came in the room and started growling and barking like she saw something. The thing went away.

The next day I was with my friend again and he gave me some sort of little pouch with some stuff in it. It looked kinda hokey new age esque but I was ready to try anything so I took it. He also gave me an explanation of what he thought it might be and what was in the pouch that would ward it off. I forget what he called it. It had a long complicated name that I think started with 'H'.The stuff in the pouch was Native American in origin.

I don't know if it was that I convinced myself it was gone or what but it never came back. I wore that pouch around my neck or tied to a belt loop for about a year after that.

I still have nightmares about this. There really aren't words for the horror I felt in the presence of this thing. I have tried to pass it off as tricks of light and such but I have seen tricks of light and mind and never been so utterly horrified.

I also should stress that it was not sleep paralysis. I get sleep paralysis often and it's not the same.

My bestfriends brother was killed when we were young, he was hit by a train on Fri the 13th, he was in the Army at that time. A few years after we were sitting in her house by ourselves when we heard the backstairs creaking (they lead to his old room) and then saw the black dress shoes - we were out of that house so fast. To this day I do believe it was him.

We live in a haunted house, so yes I have seen ghosts. DH has not. My kids have. (They didn't know they were ghosts)

I have posted this on the DIS before, but here goes again briefly. DH and I were married for 9 years without having a successful pregnancy. We moved into this house in Feb 1997. About 14 weeks later I was feeling very ill. (I thought it was the gas fireplace) I was 11 weeks pregnant!! We were thrilled. We chalked it up to a new environment and prepared for our new baby. Soon after our daughter was born it started. We would hear noises from her room and a soft humming. We also both felt a chill when we would enter her room. She would wake up crying and then start to giggle. I suspected something but let it go.

21 months later we welcomed our son. Things got much worse. My DD would talk about someone in her room and refused to go in there to sleep. We, at first thought it was because a new baby had entered our home, we dismissed this after I had my first sighting. It was in my sons room and it was a figure near his crib. At this point, I was scared and MAD! I stood in the hall and told the figure to go away, that this was my home and my children and they had no place here. I also told them that they may have lived here in the past and raised their children but it was now my time. It worked.

There were no sightings for about a year. I then saw a man twice in our living room. He made no acknowledgement of my presence. I just quietly walked upstairs to tell DH. DHs friend was over and he saw a woman "float" across the landing at the top of the stairs. (Near DSs room) DD started again talking about someone in her room and now started to sleep in her brothers room(She still does not sleep in her room-she is 6 now) I, again, had to confront the "ghosts" and tell them to leave my children alone, that they were scaring them, not comforting them. I have had no sightings for about 2 1/2 years. My DD has on occasion brought it up, so I am not sure how often she has sightings or feelings.

When I was a child of about 2-3 my mother has told me that I would sing very old songs that my grandmother recognized. When asked where I heard them I would always say the lady in the rocking chair. Apparently, as a child I had a "friend" who lived in our dining room and liked to play with me and teach me songs. My parents say she also taught me how to count on my fingers.::yes::

I dont think most "ghosts" mean us any harm and I think that once you have seen a "ghost" you are somehow more sensitive to seeing them again.

Wishing everyone a "magical" day!

So did you find out anything about "her"? That would be interesting. My sister once lived in an old house and used to see ghosts all the time. She said they weren't there to hurt anyone. She wasn't frightened. Then again...she was ALWAYS into that kind of stuff! :faint:

I haven't seen a ghost, but I knew there was a "presence" once. Lights don't turn on by themselves, and the reaction of my dog was something to see!

I'd have to say yes. There is a female presence in our house that hangs out in the kitchen. I've 'felt' her in other parts of the house, but only 'seen' her as a burst of bright light in the kitchen. DH insists it's the cat playing with the vertical blinds and I know it can't be. Each time I've seen her, the house has been very still and the cat in another room. So I know it's not the cat.

Sometimes at work I have to cover for the receptionist and need to sit in the lobby area. I'm the first person people see when they enter the building.

Everytime I work at the front desk, the automatic doors that I enter thru try to close but don't, like someone is standing there in the way. They continue to bang open for 30 seconds to a minute or until someone else comes in the door. I always joke that it's my guardian angel that protects me while I'm in the lobby. It's been happening now for a few years.

On a normal workday, I also enter through the automatic doors and this doesn't happen.

I've had many visits from a variety of spirts and ghosts. They are not here to hurt I know that much. I've done a bit of research and talking to others. I have been seeing ghosts since I was 4 and it is pretty frequent. Luckily this past year has been haunt free in my apartment! I have confronted ghosts and stated my desires, usually works. Trying to compromise is also a good thing. For instance we had 2 ghost where I worked once and one was always moving things and playing games. Trying to scare new workers and such. Well I was tired of it and stood in the room, knowing he was nearby and said he had to stop the games until 5pm. After that was ok because customers and most workers were gone. He did that too, now after 5 he always started up but at least we had peace for awhile.

Having a candle helps too. I've been told on many occasions, that ghosts can only see natural light.

I hope the experience doesn't frighten you too bad, it still can make me nervous when it happens. I mean they are dead!

I think I have, but don't like to admit that...everyone looks at me funny...

The first was when I was in 1st grade. I was sleeping one night and felt warm breath on the back of my neck. I thought it was my mom tucking me in and I turned, expecting to see her face, but instead saw a very frightening figure right beside my bed, looking at me. (I'd prefer not to describe it) I froze for a few seconds and whispered to my Raggedy Ann doll, "Do you see what I see?" it looked at me a few seconds more and disappeared. Never told my mom, but begged to be baptised after that!

Then as I got older I would occasionaly feel a presence or think I saw something, but never believed it...Till my DH and I moved into our house. It has a sad history, and we were busy restoring it. I never felt "welcome" in the house till one night I awoke hearing voices in our bedroom. Standing at the foot of our bed were several female forms. The jist of their conversation was, my Dh and I were OK, we would fix the house, we would take care of things...the mood in the house seemed to change.
When I told him, several days later what I saw, he admitted he was up late one night and had dozed off in the chair. He heard a little girl laughing and turned to see her running around the dinning room table. About to tell our daughter to go back to bed he realized she wasn't "really" there...he was seeing a ghost. The original owners of the house lost a 6 year old girl when she was run over by a horse and buggy in front of the house...but he didn't know that!

I have a ghost cat in my house. He's pretty cool...once we came to the understanding that he can't trip me as I try to walk down the stairs with the laundry! (Obviously, he couldn't "trip" me, but he did startle me enough times to make me trip!)

I have never seen a ghost, or if anything strange ever happened, I always figured there was a logical reason and would never have thought it to be a ghost. One part of me doesn't believe in the supernatual. It's just hard for me to imagine there are dead people among us because I never experienced anything out of the ordinary. But then on the other hand, one part of me feels that there truly could be ghosts even though i have never seen any.

After reading all your stories, I am a little freaked out! I always figured, ok, if ghosts are real, then people who experience this are few and far between, but now I just don't know. Seems alot of you have had experiences with ghosts.

Interesting thread, thanks for sharing your stories and opening my mind to the fact that ghosts are real.

If I were in any of your shoes during your experiences, I would have ran out of the house, and never gone back. :D I am such a chicken.

Here are my two most recent encounters.

It was in the middle of the night, and I heard the faucet in the bathroom turn on full force (our master bath is connected to our master bedroom.) The dog let out a few short quiet "woofs" and then started sniffing way high in the air from standing on the bed.
The faucet wasn't on too long, just long enough to wake me and the dog up! DH slept through it all. Anyway...the dog jumped off the bed and very slowly walked over to the bathroom. You could tell something spooked him! He eventually walked into the bathroom and turned around and came back out. I couldnt' sleep after that. Later on the next day, I found out that on that date, December 12th, was during of the battle of Fredericksburg that happened not far from my house. My immediate area has many battlefields. Could be a connection, maybe not. Who knows!

Second encounter I was in the kitchen getting a drink of water. DH says to me from the living room, "what kind of perfume is that, it's way too strong!" I told him I wasn't wearing any perfume, and I asked him what it smelled like and he said roses. The scent came and went in a matter of a few seconds.

Someone once told me that you can smell flowers when a spirit is in the same room!

Haven't had anything happen since then, and it was a few years ago.

I've never seen a ghost, but I once had an EXTREMELY vivid dream that a ghost was on top of me trying to kill me. I started yelling, "HELP ME! HELP ME!" as I tried to push it off of me. Then I heard 4yo DD screaming, and I woke up. Turns out she had climbed in bed and literally climbed on top of me while I was sleeping, and I was physically trying to throw her off of me. Took DH quite a while to get both of us calmed down!

Guess that doesn't count, though.

OK, I've only told DH this story before and he doesn't believe me. Sometimes I don't believe me.

DH and I were visiting his aunt in Litchfield CT. We were staying on the campus of the private school she teaches at, in one of the dorms. It's a very very old building. It was summer and all the kids were gone. I woke up in the middle of the night and thought, why did DH turn on the light? And then I felt a woman's presence near me. I could feel that she was hovering over me, almost in my face. I yelled "Get away from me!" and threw the covers over my face and went back to sleep. In the morning I wasn't sure if I had dreamed it or not. It seems very real to me.

When DH's uncle went there to visit, he said that the toilet paper kept unrolling itself in the night. He could hear it rolling and rolling and in the morning it was always on the floor.

I will never EVER go back there to stay again!

I have always been open to "strange things". I have had a lot of "stuff" happen to me. puter clicking on, bathroom faucet turning on while I am occupying it  , front door locking hubby out (dead bolting) while me and kids were in living room, locking hubby out other times lol (when he smoked he would go on the porch). first night in our first place I was scrubbing the floor ... then got up and was looking at my kitchen window and the dining room's (which I was in) chandaleer (sp?) slowly went out (had no dimmer switch), tv turned off.

here was a little wierder. while hubby was occupied the dooknob turned to open (kids were outside and I was on the puter). He really doesn't like to believe in this stuff but he knows what he saw type of thing. within the last month it has gotten worse. I swear I saw a bobby pin jump from my tv and bounce on the floor. While I was in the shower I swear I heard hubby walking like he does when he wants to talk while I am in the shower. He said he was outside with the kids.

these two are the worst.... I told my 2 kids to go to son's room so I can talk serious with my hubby... well I was talking I saw my daughter go in her room through the corner of my eye.. I went in after her and was looking down while I asked why she wasn't listening to me and I looked up and she wasn't there???????

I have had this sleep problem all my life but it only happens every few years. I will wake up but can't move? so I will usually sit there for a few seconds and I can move again. This time (hadn't happen in years) I looked up (can move my eyes) and there was this little girl... she was wearing all white and glowing kind of...she had her hand together in front of her... and her eyes were all over the place... at the time I was sooooo scared.. I looked away then looked that way again.. she was still there.... that happened a few times more... until I finally was able to move... I wasn't scared after that and don't know why I was so scared. I just know it wasn't a dream.

my mom has had things happen but when I told her about the things happening this time she seemed to think I was seeing things and was probably because of my meds and I need to talk to my doctor. she has had many more things happen to her but because I "saw" my daughter it was different. I think that if I was nuts it would happen a lot lol. I don't know how to explain it but it happened ... just getting worse I think is all. ok that was my story lol
