Have you regretted not bringing your own stroller?

I've brought my own stroller the past 2 times for my daughter. She's 2 and a half and it looks like we may be going back in September. I like my stroller because it reclines and has a great shade/hood. Our last trip in May we brought our stroller and she wanted the rental one in the parks. They don't recline and the shade isn't great. If I dont' bring one then we won't have one when we go to Downtown Disney and I dont' know if I'll regret not having my own or if it's not worth it to bring it everywhere including on the plane. Have you ever not brought your own and regretted it?

Well, I haven't been in that situation but I have been there without my stroller. We took ours in Sept 2000 & it was stolen, we had to use the rental for the remainder of the trip with a 3 yo & I wasn't happy. It was a long walk & wait sometimes for the buses and going to DtD was not fun with a tired little guy.

I would bring my own & just make it clear that no other stroller is going to be used, if you can do that. I would much rather have my own with me than use a rental, especially for a child of that age.

HTH!

My DD is 6.5 and I still bring my own stroller...(It's only use is at Disney) It makes life so much easier for all of us....Dh and I went in Dec 2002 without kids and we missed having somewhere to store all of our junk....can't imagine when we have to carry it every trip...

We drove last year from Chicago. We did not bring the stroller for our DD5. We rented each day at the parks. We loved the Disney strollers. They roll great on their pneumatic tires and they never had a "stray" wheel. DD5 thought they were very comfortable. We're planning on renting them again this year. Much easier than lugging ours and taking up so much space. And never having to put it on a bus or anything like that.

We usually always rent the strollers - and all three of my girls have been going to Disney since they were between 15-18 months old. The kids have always done fine, and took their naps, etc.

The only time I really regretted not having my own stroller was when we were walking around Epcot and my youngest DD had fallen asleep in the (rental) stroller. We walked all around Epcot doing my shopping. We were staying at the Swan and we pushed her in the stroller all the way to the International Gateway. I had to wake her up to get her out the stroller. Poor little thing was so tired - she just wanted to sleep a little more. Thankfully, when we got to the hotel, she did fall back asleep - but she sure was heavy to carry!!!!

If you're planning to spend a lot of time walking on the Boardwalk, Downtown Disney, etc -(and which hotel are you staying at - some of the rooms can be a little bit of a walk once you get off the bus); anyway, you may wish you had your stroller then!

We rented last time for kids 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 and will rent again this time for kids 4 and 5. I didn't regret it, but reading these threads, have come up with some things to think about:

1) Do you really like your own stroller? (we don't, we barely use a stroller at home - never any longer)

2) Does you child still fit comfortably in your stroller (my 3 1/2 year old didn't).

3) Is your child older? (Disney strollers are NOT good for infants, and I think bring your own is pretty good blanket advice for most kids until they are about two. However, Disney strollers are great for four and five year olds that won't fit in a traditional stroller)

4) Are you planning on doing DTD or someplace else stroller rentals aren't available? Are you anticpating a long walk to the room? (We don't do DTD. We have to get from our room to Disney transportation, from transportation to the parks, and back. Ususally carry-able.)

5) Is your child a "good walker?" My son could run marathons and can walk endlessly. We might need to carry him a little at the end of a long day. My daughter is not a good walker. She is slow and gets tired more easily, and really wants to be carried all the time.

6) Are you counting on stroller naps? Its possible to sleep in a Disney stroller, but especially for little ones that can fit well in a reclining stroller, your own will be more comfortable. (My kids are big enough were they'd nap better in a Disney stroller).

7) Can you lift your child easily in and out of the stroller? My 2 1/2 year old could get into the Disney stroller herself, buckle herself in, and when we stopped, unbuckle herself and get herself out. Saved a lot on mom and dad's backs (so that we could use those backs to carry her back to the hotel).

8) Does your stroller fold easily? Will you have enough hands to handle child and siblings, stroller, diaper bag etc. on and off the buses? In some cases it may be easier to rent and carry a child a short distance than to deal with child, stroller, and stuff.

I vote for bringing your own for a number of reasons.

1. Comfort. Most personal strollers are better padded, shaded, reclining, etc.

2. Space for stuff. We always had the basket packed which we couldn't do with a rental.

3. Access. If you depend on a rental, then you will be without a stroller when you exit the park. What about when you go to DTD, or walk around your resort (or visit other hotels) or do something offsite? There is a lot of walking to be done everywhere, not just inside the parks.

4. Cost. When you add up what you'll spend to rent each day, it is almost enough to buy a stroller.

5. Convenience. When I enter the park in the morning, the last thing I want to do is join the mob scene waiting to rent strollers.

I agree with all of the above. Also I prefer mine because I wonder about the germiness (is that a word?) of a stroller that thousands of other people have touched. Who knows when those stollers get cleaned?

I need the stroller(s) to get from the bus to the room. I have 3 girls (2, 5 and 7) and I couldn't begin to carry the 7 year old back to the room when her legs get tired (which happens a lot!). Also we fly, so I need the strollers in the airports.

I am voting for the use of my own walking stroller for our trip in several weeks. My daughter tires easily and I would hate to have to carry a 4 1/2 year old around every where. With a plastic canopy cover for inclement weather, I can put her in there when the rains come. (Every one has warned me they would in August.) I can carry a small cooler with water and snack bars underneath in the basket. It is also another cost savings measure for a single mom on her first trip to Disney. I do have a question however about what to do with the stroller when we are on a ride. Do I bring a lock, take off a wheel, or is there a system on Disney property?

By far, the most common system is to just park your stroller outside the attraction. But be aware that there are some occasional stories of strollers disappearing. I honestly believe that many of these cases are due to mistaken identity since so many identical strollers are there. That said, definitely do something to distinguish yours from others - tie something to the handle, etc. Also, don't invite theft by leaving stuff in your stroller. I've seen people leave all kinds of souvenirs, backpacks, cameras, etc. That's just asking for trouble.

Some folks due choose to lock their strollers with some type of bike lock. I never heard of the "remove a wheel" method but if you can take off and put on a wheel quickly and easily, that seems like a good plan.

We always rent a stroller at Disney.

Have DTD stopped renting them?

We rented one last August at DTD. They just took a credit card imprint just in case it wasn't returned as DTD is so open.

Thank you disneysteve and sadeeyore :smooth:

At the cost of $15 a day for rental, I am bringing my own. I could buy a stroller with the money I would have to spend. It is also convenient because we are staying off of Disney. As an FYI to all stroller people :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: the only travel item prohibited at Disney as per Disney is a wagon. They apparently have backed off on the Jogging/Walking Strollers. I made this phone call on 7-30-2003. Thank you again. We have 21 days to go.

Actually, I didn't know that DTD rented strollers. My DD is well past stroller age (she's 7, almost 8), but for the benefit of everyone else, where is the rental station at DTD?

I've discovered an alternative stroller issue approach, but without any experience, I don't know if it's a wise one or not. It does, however, address some of BVC's issues.

Happy Limo, I learned rents plastic strollers. The woman I spoke with there says they are the plastic Graco or Costco type. She said they constantly buy a lot of them and that they aren't that old as a result.

It only costs $10 for the duration of your trip. Of course, it must be returned in decent condition. It has no storage area, but you can add your own to it.

I figured it might be worth it to try.

The WDW strollers, I've learned are expensive, can't come out of the parks, which is a negative if you are staying at the Swan or Dolphin and your kid falls asleep in a stroller while you and your family are at Epcot.

Our stroller is a Macclaren, fairly expensive, heavier type of umbrella stroller. My husband is not in favor of lugging it on and off the plane and folding it up with each bus ride. I'd be upset if it got stolen or misplaced.

I am assuming the limo's stroller will be lighter and comfortable enough for an exhausted 5 year old. It's a risk, of course.

I've posted an inquiry for anyone who has used the Happy Limo strollers. I'm curious to see if this option is a reasonable risk.

But, it does address many concerns of some of you. It does not solve the airport sprint issue, if that's a concern for anyone.

If anyone knows about the Happy Limo stroller rented out, please let me know.

Thanks.

At DTD we went to the information desk which is on the West Side (used the entrance at Planet Hollywood, passed the fountain) and asked there. There are no strollers outside the building, but they took an imprint of credit card, and brought the stroller out to us. Strollers were simular to the ones at Epcot.

I would definitely bring my own stroller for a 2 1/2 year old!

We have taken our (just turned) 3 year old down to Disney twice in the past year. We used the stroller everywhere, not just at the parks.

I can't imagine having to carry a 2 yr old around. Even the trip TO the park would be a pain without a stroller. IMO

KIS - I don't know anything about Happy Limo but you raise a very worthwhile point. Anything that you can rent from Disney - stroller, wheelchair, refrigerator, crib, etc., can be rented from a nearby non-Disney company for far less. I believe Disney charges over $10/day for a fridge. We once rented once twice as big for half the price. The company delivered it to the room and picked it up at the end of our stay. The local phone book or tour guides list several rental companies.

I'm thinking of asking the Happy Limo to give me the model number for the stroller so that I can go check it out and decide if it would be sufficient.

DisneySteve,

I hadn't thought about renting a fridge like that. Did WDW resorts allow a fridge to be delivered like that?

They did years ago. I can't say for sure if they still do. I believe we were staying at CBR when we did it, though we also rented a crib offsite one year when our DD was an infant. I honestly don't remember all the details.

regarding outside companies: there is a baby's best friend that rents real cribs, stollers(single and double), highchairs and everything else a baby would want.

www.abbf.com

a single goes for about $65 for 4-7 nights. they even have those sit and stand walkers which are great for a baby and an older kid to hop on. they have double and triple stollers too.
