DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa is experiencing an outbreak of the mumps and health officials said there could more cases this spring.
They said it's a rare strain of the virus.
So far, 60 cases have been reported in patients ranging from 11 to 41 years old -- half of them are college students.
The virus may have come from Europe, but a similar strain has been detected in New Jersey.
The Nebraska State Health Department said there has been one case of mumps in the state so far this year. The case was in Omaha.
Symptoms of the mumps include fever, headaches and swollen glands at the jaw line below and in front of the ears.
