Hello,

My mom just got diagnosed with splenic marginal zone lymphoma:guilty: I wondered if anyone has ever heard of it, had any experiences with it?

It is a very rare type of lymphoma & basically they told her that it has no cure & they cannot do anything for her until she starts showing physical symptoms (she has none as of now). Then, they can do chemo to help, but not cure.

I cannot find much info on this, so I thought I would see if anyone on here knows anything about this & it's prognosis.

Thank you.

They may be correct, but if it were a member of my family I would definitely be betting a 2nd a even 3rd opinion from different major cancer centers. There are also new treatments and trials that are not known by all clinicians. Just last week a drug (can not remember the name) which had been withdrawn because of long term side effects was found to be just as effective in non curable patients with almost no short term side effects, minimal cost, unlike chemo, and will likely be rushed to extensive trials shortly.

First of all I was thinking of alternatives to wating until chemo is needed. So I have searched online for what it is, can it be treated, etc. What an idiotic doctor. With most cancers waiting means the cancer spreads to other systems until there is no hope. Dad and others I have known have had cancer that spread. Especially if this form is caught early there is hope. Get second opinions as either the cancer is very bad or he is incompetent.

splenic marginal zone lymphoma
It is a cancer of the spleen. If it is caught early the spleen can be removed in a spenectomy or irradiated. Another method is chemotherapy.

Splenic Marginal Zone Lymphoma

Splenic marginal zone lymphoma is generally an indolent lymphoma that involves the spleen, bone marrow and other organs. Splenomegaly is usually observed and when localized to the spleen then removal of the spleen often results in complete remission.

SMZL is also known as Splenic Lymphoma with Villous Lymphocytes. (villous means having the appearance of being covered with fine long hairs) It resembles hairy cell leukaemia and is considered to be the a leukaemic form of lymphoma. It is extremely rare and only accounts for about 1% of all lymphomas.

Diagnosis and Prognosis

SMZL usually presents with massive splenomegaly, marrow and blood involvement. Patients often have anaemia and lymphocytosis. Overall the prognosis is very good for long term survival, with the median being approximately 13 years. The two most important risk factors are anaemia and lymphocytosis.

The NIH has 415 articles but most are scientic and I already have a headache.

Definitetly go get a second third opinion, until you get a onc that acts/treats your mom, and has a treatment plan. Oviously your current onc, doesn't have a treatment plan, but wait and see. To me that is not an acceptable answer (lets wait and let it get bigger, or spread). Go to a major medical center, look for clinical trials. Ask the current doc for a referal to major medical center.

this should give you a link to search for major medical center near you.

heres a link to find a clinical trial

if you look in the drop box, maginal zone lymphoma is an option,
and then the next box populates and speenic shows up.
There are 400 trials covering all kinds of things treatment, study, screening, prevention, etc.

You can also put your zip code in to see whats near you, so you can see what is a possibility.

I will say, my mom has passed, but she was stage iv breast cancer to the liver, much of liver on diagnosis. There are for BC tons of options, so it can be overwhelming to figure out what treatments are out there.

I will repeat again, ask for a referral to major medical center, and get treatment started right now!!!

If you are in to alternative therapies, natural path, acupuncture chinese medicine, you can look in to that too, however i'm not saying don't get regular med help, just some people like alternative therapies, if for instance you end up with bad nasia from treatment protocols.

Big hug, not a fun diagnosis. I'll look around and see if i can find more.

its a pdf file, page 31 is the spleenic diagnosis and treatment page, start.

I can strongly suggest to print a few pages out, and then start googling all the words you don't know so you can become familiar with what tests are standard for that type of cancer. For breast cancer and other cancers, some docs look at certain cancer markers in your blood, or certain white.red blood cell counts, ask which markers need to be watched and then keep track of those markers. Its over whelming trying to find information. So, print out some and then start marking up the words you don't know and write the meanings on the page.

After you read the stuff for a while you can kind of figure out what things mean. Some people are able to read the journals, and stufy information, its very technical jargan. But for my mom, after you read, re-read, you start to learn the terms, so i would encourage you to do so.

Another thing, I encourage you or some other family member to go to all appointments, and take notes. Write things down. You won't remember what they said, or will forget and the words are huge strange, and not common, and they blend together if you read alot on line.

Make a list of questions for your doctor, don't be afraid to ask those questions. I always had mom/dad ask there question, and then i would ask mine. At first i felt akward, but my parents were a little afraid to ask question, and i felt i was kind of stepping on toes, but asking questions. But, i know they appreciated. If your doc doesn't like answering questions, well, i recommend finding one that wants to answer your questions, etc.

I will tell you when we went to a major cancer center, they gave us a list of treatment options for my mom. Esentially, she recommend one set of possible options. It was a multi-chemo (several chemos/drugs) at once. With several options in the mix, which we essentially picked which drugs she would take. Yes, that is strange to think about, but its a lucky guess to figure out which of the drugs may work, or not work, as everyone is an individual, i mean depending on the type and everything, certain things are ruled out. Just want to warn you about that, the major cancer center kind of always presented things like that. You kind of look at the site affects, and possible positive outcomes, etc, and hope for the best.

I also recommend you find some type of relaxation type thing for yourself during this stressful time. It can be overwelming. So, take time out for yourself to relax and destress, same with your mom.

Oh my goodness, thank you all!! I cannot thank you enough for your kind words and for the links you posted. The bullitan board was especially helpful.

My mom & our family are hanging in there for now-I just dont want to lose my mom and I don't want her to be in any pain. It is helpful to read a little more about this though, so again thank you:)
