My DH is scheduled for this in the morning. I have been telling him he will be fine... but truthfully, I think it sounds like a horrifying procedure!!:scared1:
What can I expect?

THANKS!

you're talking peridontal surg. right? I just had it done in Feb. I did not go under, I just used novocaine. My surgeon was wonderful, I really didn't feel a thing. The only 'odd' 'yucky' part of the surgery was upon taking the graft from the roof of the mouth, just a nasty sound/feeling, over in a split second. A little bit of pain during the stitching, but I just asked for more novocaine. Stock up on soups, jello, pudding & such. Food that can be swallowed without chewing. The palate that is going to be put on the roof of his mouth is rather uncomfortable & he really won't be able to chew. Mine stayed in for 10 days, I went back for my follow up & then had it back in for another week, another check up & on. (my doc likes a lot of check ups!). Overall dental hygiene is very difficult. They gave me a soft tooth brush to use, & I used diluted Listerine to rinse with. Pain wise after the surgery, I used 600mg of Advil (3 of the 200mg tabs).
Boy-I hope this is what you're talking about & this wasn't TMI:rotfl:

I am not sure about the actual procedure, but I saw my dad after he had his done. He wasn't looking to good to me. I think he was in some pain.

Yes while I was pregnant so no painkiller for me. The most pain I have ever experienced other then the time I tipped over a high chair and instantly lost my big toe nail. This includes broken bones, surgery labor you name it. Wisdom teeth no problem, cabon monoxide poisoning no problem you get the idea. I probably could need it done again but I wouldnt even leave the house to go there without the promise of something good to take after it was done.

The actual procedure was no big deal to me it was afterwards. My mom also had it done and said she could barely drive to the pharmacy and felt bad she talked me into getting it done while pregnant.

Yep. A few years back. It wasn't that bad. Now it looks like nothing ever happened.

It's like having the worst pizza cheese burn on the roof of your mouth x 100! Make sure he takes plenty of time off from work, because he'll feel worse than he expects. You also can't bend over until the stitches are removed. Tylox will be his new best friend :). Good luck, and I hope your DH has a quick recovery.

My dh is a big baby but he did just fine with his. He drove himself there, had it done (with novocaine), then went back to work. I don't think he worked 100%, but he was okay.

The only bad thing that happened was that you are naturally cautioned about hitting the gum which could accidentally dislodge the graft. I am normally a very quiet sleeper who does not move around very much but... That night for the only time in my life, I was flailing around in my sleep and popped him right in the kisser. Amazingly, I did no damage, but it hurt like you know what. I felt so bad.

Come on, was that hit a mistake...heehee :lmao:

Just reading the title of this thread makes me want to :faint:

I had one. I'm a total freak about the dentist. I can barely manage and cleaning without drugs - and I thought it wasn't a big deal. For me, it was much easier than getting a filling. Honest!

My son had one too. Again, not a big deal. I thought the worst part was having to wear the weird gum guard afterwards.

I had one in November - it's really no big deal - drove myself there and back. Just had novocaine. I believe I went back to work the next day. Just took tylenol.

Jenny:)

I had one about 2 yrs ago. I have other gum surgeries so wasnt too worried. The procedure itself was ok. This time I let them give me the tranqulizer pill(sorry forgot which one)beforehand, and coupled with the novacaine I was in no pain during the procedure.
The worst part was all those darn stitches all over my mouth. I would say the after pain lasted much longer then the other gum surgeries I had.

I had it done 2 different times. It's not so bad. It just feels like you burnt the roof of your mouth for awhile. It was not as bad as they said it was going to be, in my opinion. I did not have any down time at all.

thanks everybody for terrifying me!! I was supposed to have this done (set appt for consult) and have totally chickened out...now I am more chicken.

honest- it truly was not bad- not something you'd sign up for if you didn't have to but really I've experienced worse. The 'afterwards' were worse- annoying more than true pain. Uncomfortable the 1st 24 hrs, but after that it was just annoying. Losing a tooth (in my case it was a front bottom one) would be worse.

Thanks everyone for sharing. :goodvibes
He did better than I thought. He's in some pain but was okay to mow the lawn...:cool1:
The worst part is trying to feed him!! He needs soft foods. He keeps telling me he's starving. I made him a big pot of oatmeal this morning but he wants to eat again. UGH!:rotfl2:

Dental assistant here... I work for a dentist who performs soft tissue grafts.
Keep the area really cold today, frapes, milk shapes, popsicles are all great!
Make sure he eats nutrious soft foods. Generally anything he can eat with a knife and fork are okay. Avoid things that he bites right in to (crusty breads, apples, corn on the cob, etc...)
Some soft food suggestions are...
pancakes, fish, mashed potato, pasta, soups, eggs,
Hope this helps. I've had a graft myself and it's really not all that bad.
Asuming he has a dental packing over the area. Make sure it stays secure. If it becomes loose, call the treating office to have it replaced.

I'm glad he survived (the DH's are usually pretty wimpy- I know mine is:goodvibes ). I was always hungry- I got bored & annoyed w/ eating, I ended up losing 10 #s (of course gained it all back once I got rid of that thing on the roof of my mouth! :rolleyes1 )

Glad to hear your DH did fine. I'm supposed to have this done and reading this thread made my stomach hurt. Although, I wouldn't mind the 10 lb weight loss.
