Have you gotten this letter before (IRS)

We still haven't received our Illinois state tax refund. Not that shocking considering how broke our state is. Lots of people have had to wait for theirs.
I was able to file online with the PIN number provided by the state. Pretty simple to do.

So yesterday I got a letter from the Illinois Department of Revenue stating that they could not verify my withholdings, and I would need to provide copies of all our W-2's. But instead of just writing this letter and asking for these documents, they send me a bill for several thousand plus penalty fees plus interest on the penalty!

Then, on the back, it says "they have corrected my return" and on the withhold line they changed it to "0". I'm not sure if I'm more irritated that I have to dig out my tax stuff and mail it off or it's more the fact they had the nerve to give me a penalty, when the whole year last year I paid those taxes and then some!

Has anyone had this happen to them?:confused3

If you have an accountant, let them handle it.

we are also from Illinois and we filed, seperatly, a tax return that we could get for our new roof. Instead of getting the check, we got a bill :scared1:, DH freaked out to say the least, I mean we got a new roof, paid for it and tax lady said we can get a refund for a few hundred and they ended up billing us, plus interest. We got it all cleared up th IRS guy on the phone said must of been their mistake, just a simple push of the minus sign instead of the plus. UGH! So we then had to resend tax paper work and are still waiting.

Not from your state but from NC...I got one like that several years ago and I also went into a small panic. After I calmed down and finished blaming my DH...oops!...I called our DOR and was able to talk to someone. It turned out that somehow my W-2s got seperated from my return. We sent them and then we recieved our refund.

I hope the same is as easy for you...oh...I had to say I was sorry to DH too...;) Good Luck!

Call the IRS to determine what the problem is. You can request a copy of your transcript through the IRS for free and fill out a 1040x form with a copy of your W2s to prove your withholdings.

My IL return went through fine, I filed online like always and got my refund in a few weeks (not much about $200 I think). I've never heard of anything like this before. Give them a call and see if you can talk to someone. Try calling 1st thing in the morning, calling later in the day you may have to hold a long time before you get a person. If you have your W2's saying your employer withheld your tax, you should be fine, they'll be able to correct it once you send in your copies. Likely it was a glitch in the computer or human error.

I'm a little confused. Your title says a letter from the IRS, but your post indicates a state tax issue, not a federal tax issue. This sounds like a problem that can be easily resolved, assuming you did have proper withholding taxes taken out, provide the W-2s and more than likely, they will cancel the whole assessment including the penalties. I'm sure they send an assessment or a bill in order to let people know they need to take the issue seriously.
