Have you ever seen a CM approach someone smoking in a non-designated area?

I am a smoker and do not smoke outside of the designated smoking areas. Some are harder to find than others, but most are beautiful places to sit and relax. Give those puppies a chance for a break. DH doesn't smoke so he will get frustrated sometimes when I take a smoke break but hey...its my Disney too. LOL I too have seen people smoking outside of smoking areas. Especially in Epcot. Lots of people in Epcot World Showcase. I guess since they are drinking beer they need that cigarette and don't care where they are. I haven't seen any CMs approach anyone though. I know if I was a CM I would be leery of approaching someone. Its a shame that people would be rude when it is a posted rule but I'm sure it happens. And that is not fair to the CM. If I was smoking in a non smoking area by accident and a CM were to let me know, I would certainly put it out. And if I'm in a place where smoking is allowed and someone politely asked me to put it out, I would certainly do so. Now if that same person was snotty about it and I was allowed to smoke in that area then I probably wouldn't. It's all about how you approach it. Treat me with respect and I in turn will treat you the same. And if I'm in the smoking section, do not expect me to put my cigarette out. There are only so many places smokers can smoke now. But if I'm not in a designated smoking area, as long as someone is respectful, out it goes or I move to another location. Its all about respect. Shame on those individuals who treat CMs without respect. To all you CMs or parent of CMs THANK YOU and YOURS for all you do! If it wasn't for the pleasant CMs Disney would just be another vacation spot, not the Magic that it is.

When we went with my mom (who's a smoker), my mom was very curtious and made sure that she was at the right place to smoke . We did see someone not smoking in the designated area and a CM pointed them out to where my mom was smoking at, seems the person thought they were at the right place and when the smoker joined my mom at the designated area, my mom joked that "You better make sure your at the right spot or Mickey Mouse will throw you out". ;)

Just wanted to add my 2 cents,

My DF & I smoke. We've been down together twice, and we're going again on our honeymoon. We have also been to many other themeparks that do not have disney's view on smoking. I will say that I much prefer how disney handles this issue in comparison to other parks which do not provide an area. Without a smoking area, people light up everywhere and therefore leave their butts everywhere. Again I Smoke... but the designated smoking area's are in alot of nice secluded spots that I probably wouldn't have even seen. My favorite is in epcot near the china pavillion its in the gardens, there are 2 or 3 benches and 2 butt top cans. Now I'll admit when im in a rush to go ride to ride, having to stop, go off the beaten path to smoke, isnt always agreeable, nor is having to find one near a dining establishment just to have my after meal cigarette, but i adjust. The only time i've ever had an issue is one time at the AK park, there was a very crowded smoking area (like 16 people smoking) near where pooh and friends were getting their pictures done on the way back to the area with the dinosours (I've been down lots, i've only done AK once, blasphmey i know) this couple walked by and started yelling at all of us how they didnt pay $2500 to come to disney to get smoked out. Well I didnt pay to come and get abused i told them.

Is there a list or a map of the smoking areas somewhere online?
I did run across one on a UK board but cannnot remember where that was.
They listed the areas in each park

Can anyone tell me if there are spots to sit near the smoking area but not in? I know sounds weird, but DH and I both smoke, but we do not smoke around our daughter--only outside away from her. If one of us goes into smoke the other will be with DD but we don't want to be so far apart we lose each other. Hope fully this really isn't going to be an issue as I am trying to quit smoking again. I figure the extra money will be good for our trip! I had quit during my entire pregnancy but restarted the 3 day DD was in NICU when she took a turn for the worse (wouldn't know by looking at her she was 6 weeks premature)and now am having to quit again--( it has been 38 hrs so far!). TIA!

For the most part it appears that most of the smoking sections are near the bathrooms. A few years ago it was common to see cm's redirect smokers but in Jan they seemed lax. We were standing in line for magic carpets and people were smoking along the wall on the outside. A castmember walked past the smoking people. Hopefully they will monitor this better, i don'y have anything against smokers I just don't want to smell like smoke.

Yesterday we used the restroom under Spaceship Earth. When we exited we had to hold our breath because the air was so full of smoke. To me, that isn't a very good place to place smokers areas, as everyone has to use the restrooms--- even those who don't smoke or may be allergic to it!

EEyore0062, I am a smoker, but I totally agree with you on this. There are a few designated smoking areas that my BF and I refuse to smoke at because they are either right near a bathroom, or very very close to the beaten path. I guess the reason we are this way is because my Mother doesn't do so well with smoke. There are some areas that Disney does need to rethink. I have noticed the area close to the HM has been moved. It was on the main path, but at the beginning of Feb, it was gone.

All the smoking areas that I can picture in my mind are close to other non-smoking areas with either benches or pathways that "should" be smoke free. You could also take walkie-talkies or cell phones so that one could ride rides with the daughter while the other takes a break.

In the seven or so trips that I have taken to Disney, I have seen a CM re-direct a smoker ONE time, and that was at the insistence of a guest. Really, why have rules if they aren't enforced? I have also seen one smoker given "the talk" at Universal, so Disney and Universal are tied for enforcing their smoking policies in my experience.

One time, I took it upon myself to tell a smoker with an Irish(?) accent that there were designated smoking areas, because I could tell that he had no idea he was doing anything wrong. We were both standing at a booth manned by a CM, who had said nothing to the smoker.

I am originally from the UK, when I was at college I used to work at a popular tourist attraction at weekends and holidays. They had a no-smoking policy. If I saw someone smoking I would always ask them to put it out and remind them it was a no-smoking building. Most of the time people were fine, but you would be amazed at the amount of people that would get cross and say that they didn't know, and often be stood next to a very large no-smoking sign..or the best being "well why do you have all these trash cans then?" ...biting your tongue and thinking, well sir for trash.......but hey ho! Some people just genuinely don't know, which is fine, but it's just so awful when someone gets mad at you. I have noticed plenty of offenders at WDW, but I like to give them the benfit of the doubt.
Mind you my favorite visitor where I worked, was the lady that thought it was perfectly reasonable for her child to go to the toilet in a corner of one of the rooms. It wasn't just a question of being caught short and wetting his pants, she actually pulled his trousers down for him, and unfortuantely it wasn't just for a pee.....

Actually, I wouldnt be surprised if the reason WDW has smoking areas is because the cigarette butts all over the ground. Not because of health or allergy issues. The place I worked at last was just like that. The boss said the health problems were not the issue. He just didnt like seeing cigarette buts everywhere.

It is too bad some people give the CM a hard time. They are just trying to make the park safe and do their jobs. A special thanks to all the CM you have to put up with these difficult guest. :cheer2:

I was wondering if you have ever seen a CM at one of the four parks remind someone to smoke in the designated area only? I know this is a hot issue and I don’t want to debate the policy. I think most people who know about the policy follow it. Last time I was there it was only a small paragraph in the guide map. I think they need more signs. (Unless they have added some since my last visit) I was wondering if the CM enforce the current policy? :scratchin :scratchin

Yes. I was at EPCOT talking with a very nice female CM. About that time she graciously excused herself and approached some slob of a guy puffing on a cigarette. I could tell that she was politely asking him to extinguish it. He looked at her, dropped the cigarette to the ground, ground it out with his big hairy foot in a sandal, and walked off, leaving her to pick up the butt. I was stunned. When she got back to me, I said, "I am so sorry some people are so hateful". She showed her true graciousness (something he will never have a clue about) by just shrugging it off. What a classy gal! :earsgirl:

Just to comment further on this... A comment in this thread that keeps coming back is that people see CM's walk right past people smoking in the parks, ect.

Honestly, they probably aren't watching for it, and if they don't directly see it, or smell it, they aren't going to notice it. I used to work the doors of the clubs at Pleasure Island, and there were several times where a guest with a cig. got past 3 different cast members, and we didn't notice until the smell hit us as the guest walked past, and we had to quickly stop them after they had already stepped inside. We can't catch them all. And I know I can't speak for all CM's. I'm sure there are some that don't care about the smoking issue, unfortunately, and there are other cast members that may be shy. Thats not me though.. If I notice it, I say something, even when I am visiting the parks as a guest, I have re-directed people to the smoking areas.

The big thing is to speak up. You don't have to confront the other guest directly, just let the next cast member you see know what is happening. In my experiance in the parks, the custodial CM's are both the easiest to find, and generally the fastest ones to respond to someone smoking. They have to clean up the butts, and since they are free to roam, they generally don't have to leave their other tasks to take care of it.

You mentioned that you guess the reason you are this way is because of your Mom who doesn't do so well with smoke. Well, I would like to add that I think it's because you exercise common sense and a sensitivity to others. Good for you! Thank you for being so courteous! :cool1:

:guilty: In Oct were were at MK on a day trip from Sarasota, we stayed at AS-MO that night so we could close the park and not be wiped out.

Anyway!! My sister does not do rides, so when bestfriend and I did Splash & BTMRR, DD got bored at Laughing Place so Jen put her in the stroller and looked for a shaddy spot to wait for us to get off BTMRR. There was a very nice shaddy landing down next to the exit, but it was a Smokers Zone.. all other benches were in direct sun.

It just kind of sucked that a nice place to rest, they could not.

just an observation..

And thank you to all you smokers who do abide by the rules. I remember DD walking for a bit at MK and almost getting it in the eye with a 'butt'.
