Have you ever requested a king bed and not gotten one? How about non smoking rooms?

I just realized we are in a smoking room, and I'm allergic to smoke so I can't risk it. What if they don't have any non smoking rooms left? Also, my BF is very tall. He needs to be in a king bed because full beds are too short as a rule.

Have you ever requested a king bed and not been able to get one?

Yep. Many, many times. We ALWAYS request a king bed, since that's what we sleep in at home. It's no fun to "downgrade" to a smaller bed on vacation. Only once in all our trips have we actually gotten a king bed, and that was at Port Orleans French Quarter. I guess they just don't have many of them.

You might "enjoy" this story based on your post... We requested a king non smoking for the Contemporary Tower last May. When we checked in, we were told that no Kings were available at the time. After a little bit of prodding and some computer checking, they found a King- Non Smoking that would be ready after 3 (we arrived early at 1:00.) Great, we thought and went off to the park until the room was ready... When we came back and entered the room after being told it was all set, we found a King bed, but also a strong smell of smoke, a dirty ashtray, and a still open pack of cigaretts on the table... Back to the desk.. Long story short,... after some waiting, negotiating, and asking for a manager we were given the following options:

1. Non Smoking Wing Room with King Bed
2. Tower with Queens
3. The "smoky" room after they would try and clean it again...

Needless to say, we took option 2 and made do without the King...

Sorry for all the detail, but I thought it might give you a real example.. From what I understand, King beds are relatively tough to find in WDW resorts due to the number of families sharing rooms etc., ..steve c

We have only gotten a king bed once and we had to move on our second day to get it. We have however, always received a non smoking room.

Thanks all. Okay. I won't get our hopes up. I just hate that my BF will have to be uncomfortable and probably won't sleep well. :(

But the non smoking room is more important because I have to be able to breathe.

I don't remember the exact post (or even if it was on this site), but someone said he had the same worries about a double bed since he was tall. The castmember at the desk said that Disney had "magic beds" and that he should try it and let her know. When he tried the bed, it actually was long enough for him (longer than other double beds he had used before).

I don't know if that hotel had queen mattresses or if all Disney double mattresses are longer than normal, but maybe the Disney magic will work for you too!

King beds at the value resorts are tough to get. We are about 50-50 on getting them. Since most (if not all) of the rooms with King bed are handicap accessible, those folks get their request filled first, as it should be.

As for non-smoking, I always have "Guaranteed" non-smoking on my ressies. They will put this on your ressie if you tell them that it's a medical reason you need the non-smoking room. BUT now let me warn you. Last summer I had GUARANTEED non-smoking room for the A/S Movies and surprised when I checked in that they had NO non-smoking rooms available for our stay and had not reserved a room for us. We were not happy and the only option we were given was to move us to the A/S Sports resort which they had already done before we even arrived. So we then had to schlep our luggage and selves over to the Sports and checkin in over there. It just didn't matter to them that we were not happy about it. It didn't matter that I could not sleep in a smoking room and had a GUARNTEED room. I wrote and complained when I arrived home and got the basic answer because I had a discounted room, "I got what I paid for...."

So now I find as long as I check in EARLY I almost always get what I want. On that stay last year, I checked in around 4:00PM and got nothing.

:( Our flight does not land until 10:30 pm. There is no way we can check in early. Is there a way to call the front desk and speak to someone the day before. I do have a medical reason why I can not stay in a room that has been smoked in and if they only have smoking rooms when I get there, I will have to stay somewhere else. :(

EsmeraldaX - I was also supposed to be arriving very late and I needed a non-smoking room. I called the resort and they noted on my reservation that I was a late arriving VIP (!!!) and to hold the room for me. This was at the swan.

I'm never able to get a king size bed when travelling with dbf. Of course if I'm travelling with my mom or brother, king beds are all that's available

Unforunately, it won't help. Even if they pre-assign you a room, it can still be taken away by a person who checks-in earlier and finds their assigned room unacceptable. Basically room assignments are on a first come-first served basis.

Sorry to hear about everyone not getting their requests but I guess DBF and I have just been lucky because we've always gotten a king bed everytime we've asked for one. We also always have discounted rooms but check in about 11 am. Maybe that's the difference.

We request a king every time we go..we have only not gotten one about 3 times. Pretty good, considering we stay on property about 20 times per year.

Non-smoking room. Shouldn't be a problem. They made a mistake at coronado this past spring..put us in a smoking room, we called from the room and it was no problem to change.

EsmeraldaX: Call CRO and have them add the non-smoking as a medical condition. We have slept in two king bed rooms at Pop. One was standard (4th floor) and the other disabled (1st floor). Both were far away from the action in 80's A. I ordered my requests non-smoking, then king bed, then 50's or 70's building. I was happy to get the king bed room.

I've paid the extra $10 for king at both CSR and POR.

Wilderness Lodge gave us a choice, we picked the king bed room (I believe all are disabled baths at WL, but could be mistaken).

Would you say that most rooms with bunks are non-smoking since they'd assume there would be children in those rooms? We will have an awfully late check in at AKL in Nov (our flight doesn't even arrive until midnight) and we've requested a non-smoking room w/bunk. We've also requested a certain location, a coffeemaker, and a fridge (for medical reasons). I know we'll all be tired and cranky by the time we actually reach the resort - how optimistic can I be about receiving these requests?

Karen

Thanks. I will call and see if they can make a note that I have a severe allergy.

Ironically , my BF smokes, but he doesn't smoke anywhere even remotely near me. He always goes off for a minute to the smoking sections. He'd never smoke in the room or balcony.

If you can afford it and a king size bed is important to you, you could switch to one of the moderates. You can book a king size bed at a moderate but there is no guarantee of a view. It costs $10 more than what it costs to book at standard room at a moderate. I think with codes the moderates for king size beds are $89. Have a great trip.

Even if you are given a NS room there is no guarantee it will not have been smoked in by the previous guest. This seems to have happened alot lately to us.

I don't know if it will help but have you considered faxing a letter from your doctor explaining the situation re: the smoke? Might help.

We have this issue, too. I am allergic to smoke, and DH is 6'5 and does not fit on a double.

Thankfully, my mom was able to go earlier in the week to POP and request a king adjoining to a double double since that's the perfect combination for what we needed. THey had one waiting for us when we checked in later that night.

And for the record - he attempted to lay on the double bed (i read that same post about the magical beds before our trip) and he did NOT fit. So I'm glad it worked out - as he wouldn't have slept well hanging off =)

Call ahead, have it noted on your reservation, and maybe even call the hotel that day while in route there and request it again. I think they are pretty good at giving you requests, esp if you're not picky about your room location as long as its nonsmoking and a king =)

Thanks all. :)

I may see if I can get something from my doctor.

AS for staying at a moderate....I kind of want to, but he really wants to stay at PC. So it's PC this time, and my pick next time. :teeth:

(my pick is going to be either WL, AKL or the Swan in May '05 :) )
