I've never walked out, but I've had crazy stuff happen and had co-workers that have. The co-workers left in the middle of a giant 'restructuring' that changed job descriptions without notice- one left after that meeting with their resignation on the desk as the manager was at dinner, the other left their resignation at the end of the night. Others resigned instead of being put on "probation" for things that were being applauded under the previous management.
I've always handed in a month's notice on professional jobs in order to finish up projects, but the last shortened my time to two weeks due to circumstances. None of my jobs would have let me take sick or vacation time once resignation was handed in and our time usage was watched and approved (city/government job)..
Now, there have been jobs where I've been hired, filled out the paperwork, gotten the uniform/name tag, and then never called for shifts. If they never terminated my employment and I'm still "an associate" then I've been working at Lane Bryant, Hardee's, and Target since the 90's.
