Have you ever had the police knock on your door?

Yes-one time looking for my neighbors-they had an arrest warrant for the daughter but they had abandoned the house. Another time detectives knocked when someone was dead in the street a few house down, wanted to know if we heard gunshots etc (turns out they were shot in Brooklyn and then drove out here and dumped body in street. A few months back detectives knocked again asking if they could see my security camera footage. The gangbanger kid up the block and his girlfriend were shot in car outside his parents house on my block and they were looking for footage of the shooters car.

Yes, at work. We had panic buttons in my old office and every now and then we would unknowingly push the button. One day it was during our lunch and three of the four of us were eating and talking. The fourth had left. All of a sudden pounding was coming from my door and shouting "this is the police open up". We were scared. Carefully I opened the door, but remained behind in case it was a hoax. There stood three police officers in full gear, hands at their hips. They had assumed (and rightly so), that one of us was in a bad situation with a student. Thankfully that wasn't the case. The desk that had set it off was coworker #4. They apologized for scaring us, but were good sports about it. It got them out of the campus police station.

Going on two years ago I was home from work sick. I was watching tv when I heard a loud bang and shake. My dogs started howling. It wasn't an earthquake. I cautiously went to the front door and opened it up. There stood the SWAT team in riot gear as well as multiple sheriffs officers. They instructed me to stay inside and lock the door. From the upstairs window I carefully watched the events unfold. I saw the two older guys who lived next door handcuffed and at the back of the SWAT van and sheriffs truck. My neighbors were taken into custody but were home within a few hours. They were not the ones being sought after. It was the nephew of ones ex-girlfriend. He occasionally stayed over and apparently sold meth and other drugs when in town.

If I hadn't been sick I'd have missed all the neighborhood drama.

Yes, probably more than once. The one that sticks out in my mind was when my brother and I were in high school. Cops show up and his response is "oh crap, what did I get caught for". ,

I had a similar situation as the PP. Back before it was popular, I worked from home from time to time. At the office I had to dial 9 to get an outside line, and then a 1 + the number I was dialing. When I would work at home sometimes from habit, I would dial 9 and 1 then realize that I wasn't in the office and hang up. Then I would pick up the phone and dial correctly. It always crossed my mind that one day I might make a mistake and call 9-1-1.

One day it happened -- but, I didn't realize that I called 911. I don't remember how, but somehow they called my husband who was not home with me at the time (maybe our home number was forwarded to him?). The 911 operator told my husband what had happened and asked if he wanted to send the police to our home because if there was a problem they didn't want to call the house and tip off a would be intruder. My husband sent the police and when I opened the door I told them it obviously was a mistake, and there was no problem. But, the police said that they had to come into the house and make sure no one was there hiding or making me make this statement against my will. They came in looked through the house and left.

Nothing terrible, but a situation that I always knew had the potential to happen!

My mom did something similar when her dad was in the hospital, they'd driven up on the 30th of December as it looked like her dad (my grandpa) wasn't going to make it. My mom had called my sister and I several times from the hospital (dial 9 for an outside line, 1 for long distance, etc) then gone to her step-mom and dad's house for the night. He dad passed early in the morning of the 31st and when she went to call and tell us she dialed 9, then 1, and stuttered on it. She explained the whole tale to the 911 operator, she felt bad but had to send the police to check because of the 911 call anyway. My mom said the poor cop who came to the door looked to be about our age (19-20ish) and when she explained what happened he clearly felt horrible and so uncomfortable. Anyway that's my fun NYE story to tell at parties lol.

Backstory: in Germany speeding is controlled by “blitzing” camera speed radar. If you are too fast the driver gets their picture taken. When you get the ticket the picture is included in the letter as proof and you pay the fine.


Well I had just moved to Germany to my DH’s little village of 800 people. At the time his BF sharing our home. One morning I looked out the window and see a cop standing at our front door at like 8am . My heart dropped. I did a fast mental inventory ( ok just spoke with DH he’s alive at work). Had spoken with my mom too the night before.

So I answer and the cop shows me this speeding ticket asking if Incan identify the driver. The driver was my DH’s BF!!! I was like OMG what are the German rules/ laws. Is my answer an official statement etc. ???so I answered “ I cannot 100% say “. And then he left. I called my DH and was like did I say the right thing? He was like yes.

Well the embarrassing thing about this is that cop lives in our town. !!! I did not know this at the time. And of course due to being a very small town. He knew who I was and that of course I knew who that driver was.

Turns out DH’s BF kept ignoring the fine letters.
