Have You Ever Formally Protested or Boycotted Anything?

Here in MA there is a family owned grocery store chain (Market Basket) that had ousted it's very much loved and respected boss (there's a whole big background to the infighting of the family). I joined in with many, many loyal customers and shopped at a different grocery chain. I believe it lasted 6 weeks. In the end the boss came back after buying out the other half of the families share in the business.

We went up to NH for vacation a couple of time while this was going on and we always went to Market Basket while we were up there. We refused to go though and had to hit up Big Y instead. So glad it worked out for the employees and the owner.

Yes, everyday I am actively protesting and boycotting by the way I live my life and through the products I do (or do not buy). I'll leave it at that before it has possibility of it turning itself into a debate!

Also, certain media outlets, because I feel their opinion is overly biased.

I SO respect this, regardless of what your ideology is. To me it's all about integrity and being accountable for the knowledge you have.

The only thing I can think of right now is when I was really young (around 8 or 9) my neighborhood in NY was going to get a McDonalds. For some reason a very large chunk of the neighborhood (or so it seemed at the time) was against it. I remember we all had signs and stood in front of the soon to be McDonalds. Needless to say the McDonalds came and is still there 40 years later. Recently I had asked my mom why we were so against it but she doesn't remember it at all. For some reason it stuck with me though. Guess it made a big impression. Oh and once McDonalds came everyone ate there.

Similar thing going on in my neighbourhood for the past two years. Every couple of months the doorbell rings and it's another NYMBY petition against the McDonald's that has bought a building site at our local retail strip. Apparently our neighbourhood is too "upscale" for the likes of a fast-food joint, and maybe it would even attract people who don't actually live in our rarified bubble to the drive through... Myself, I'm pro-McDonald's and anything else that makes my life more convenient. There's at least one neighbour of mine that won't make eye-contact with me anymore...

We used to be Heinz people. My great grandma, grandfather etc all worked for Heinz. We bought Heinz products exclusively (where applicable) even though no one in the current generations ever worked there.

Heinz pulled their factory from our area & we along with lots of Ontarians now buy French's ketchup, Canadian made & I don't miss Heinz. I'd rather go without than buy Heinz.

Our family boycotts BP for how they acted and responded to the Deepwater Horizon spill.

My husband has boycotted Exxon since the Valdez. Sometimes it gets a little hairy on road trips.

Exxon after Valdez is a really interesting story. They completely and totally changed their safety culture after that, and decades later are still among the safest companies. It's a fascinating case study in how one responds to a spill (or other tragic issue). If you're boycotting BP for how they *responded* to Deepwater (which was horrific!) you might consider ending your boycott of Exxon because of how they responded since Valdez

I NEVER watch the National news.. sometimes will catch the local news..
Never have participated in an organized protest or boycotted anything. To be honest, apathy gets in the way.

Okay, call me uninformed....I will guess Maybelline is for testing on animals, and never heard of the Good Place so that's neither here nor there, but what did Gillette and Neeson do? You don't like magic or bad acting?

In the spirit of today's DIS, since we don't agree do you now need to tell I am full of hate?

Posters, including myself, weren't presenting arguments to rebut yours and the poster's statement-instead we were presenting what is history.

If you and the other poster are of the opinion that individuals who are both white and male have not had the same plights as others and thus have not protested/marched/whatever the same as others sure fine whatever that is your opinion.

However to outright deny that individuals who are both white and male, (well honestly interjecting race in there...yeah just going to leave it there) have never had to protest/march/fight for rights or be denied something well unfortunately there is no room opinions there because it is actual history.

And no I'm not looking for a debate nor an argument here.

There are a couple of stores that I have, and am boycotting. There are shows that I refuse to watch. And there are actors that I will not see at the theater.

I also make sure to frequent stores who are being boycotted.

Penn Jillette is probably because of how outspoken of an atheist he is. He also believes firmly in his constitutional rights to the point of making a skit on how terrible the TSA is and how it violates the constitution. Not sure about Neeson. I imagine the Good Place is a religious based boycott as well.

Ok, I hope the OP responds and clarifies. Being an outspoken atheist is his Constitutional right, not sure how that's boycott-able As is the TSA video (although I've never seen it, maybe it's awful??). Just me being curious as I've heard of reasons for most of the posters boycott's, but these are new to me.

I've seen the TSA skit. He does it at most of his shows. He basically shows how the old metal detectors were awful and how you could get things through no problem. He does all of this while reading the Bill of Rights against search and seizure. They sell (and use themselves) metal cards that have that portion of the bill of rights printed on it so people who are pissy at the TSA can do the same thing they do when they fly which is purposefully make the alarm go off. It is showboating but if you take your constitutional rights as hard core as he does I can imagine why making a tiny stance every time you fly would be something you would want to do. Of course they make money off those cards but based on his record with the TSA he does follow through.

I am so curious as to the above! Can you share?

I come from a long line of protestors - suffragettes, civil rights, environment etc. I think there is power in numbers and they bring attention to serious issues.

I guess I tend to do the opposite of boycott. When they were calling for a boycott of Chik Fil A--I made sure to go that day. And I will always shop Hobby Lobby over Michael's. I tried to boycott Walmart but it didn't work out because it was hurting ME a whole lot more than it was hurting them. lol

I would march for things like animal rights, education and things dealing with children, women's rights in other countries but it seems like so many of the speakers and many of the protestors at these events just get way out there beyond what most people believe or even want to do. Can't get behind stuff like that.
