Have you ever ended a friendship? (very long)

Friendships are difficult sometimes. Someone you met when you were very young and with whome you shared all the same interests can become someone later in life that you have nothing but your past in common with. I have two friends like that. I still consider them my friends and would be there for them if they ever needed me but I don't talk to them often. We just took very different paths in life. Our friendship has what I call "tides". We have times that the tide is out and times that the tide is in. They know they can flow back into my life any time they need to. Different people want different things out of a friendship. If you need a very close relationship with a friend you need to let the person know that you need more than they are giving. They can decide if they can be the kind of friend you need or if they can't. I also have someone I once thought of as a friend that I now would go out of my way NOT to ever see again(and have!). She needed far more from the friendship (read "you must have no life that does not include me") than I could give her. She went nutso on me and even left messages for my boss about what a terrible friend I was! I thought we were just very good work friends but she thought we were "best friends" and wanted me to call her every 1/2 hour. I didn't realize what she needed until it was to late or I could have saved us both some pain. Talking with the friend sounds like a good idea. I would recommend at least a phone call if not a letter, but I wouldn't want to leave something that seems so important to you to an e-mail. Good luck in making a decision that will make you feel better.
