just to find out what time it is?
I don't know if you can still do that, but growing up it was not too uncommon to do it.

I dont ever recall calling the operator, but we did call the bank which had an automated system that told what time it was. And if I remember correctly, it also told the weather.

I have done it growing up, but haven't for a loooong loooong time now! Not sure if you still can! :confused3

ur...no.

the only time i used to use the operator, was to make calls with out them showing up on the college bill.

lol

This is what we have here.

Years ago when I was growing up, there used to be a telephone number that you called to find out the exact time. "At the tone the time will be......."
Now I just use either my cell phone or my cable box to find out.

I remember calling the operator when I was younger to ask for the time. LOL Thanks for the memory!

I used to be a Directory Assistance Operator.:rotfl: I am sure they still have "live operators"...although not sure how many.

I used to call the operator to make collect calls, never the time. There used to be a number for that and I would look it up in the phone book. Yea...nerd alert.:lmao:

I forgot about that!

We also used to have a number to call for the time and weather as well.

I can also remember dialing numbers with just 5 digits.

For example, if the number was 536-3456, you'd just dial 6-3456. Even today, I'll remember phone numbers in that format, even though I have to dial the entire thing including area code.

And did anyone have a party line?

I remember doing that and calling the number that said "at the tone" Forgot about that one.

My DH (before he was my DH) called the operator one time because they didn't know if a straight beat a full house (or something like that LOL) She didn't know but asked around until she got the answer. Ahhh....customer service, where has it gone???

We had a "time and temperature" number to call when we were growing up.

I did however have an aunt who was a telephone operator back when the operators were local. I would push the kitchen chair up to the wall pick up the phone, dial 0 and ask to speak with my Aunt Norma. All the ladies she worked with knew us and they'd laugh and connect me.

I was an operator for 10 years and people did it all the time. I hated working the day after the clocks changed  . Actually we'd have to tell people the "approximate time is" since we were getting it from the clocks on the wall or our watch which could be wrong.

We had a time and temperature number to call as well. I don't remember ever calling the operator just always got the automated recording with the time and temp.

Wasn't the number" GR2-1212? That is what I remember dialing. I believe I am showing my age since I remember using letters. Our home phone started with 565 and we would say Logan5 for the 565. I am feeling old!

We have time and weather numbers to call. Always have. Never heard of calling the operator for those.

We used to have a phone number with an automated time recording. I LOVED calling it when I was younger, so much that my parents put a little post-it up next to the phone so I could call it - one of the first numbers I ever really called. :rotfl2:

Only in a hotel a couple of times when I didn't trust the clock in the room and had changed time zones in travel and wasn't sure what the local time actually was, but never at home.

We used to call for the time when we were kids, but now I just look at my cell phone.

That reminds me of a joke Stephen Wright says:
"The other day I couldn't find one of my socks, so I called information and said "Where's my other sock?" She said "under the coach", and it was".

No, but I once had a client call the hotel switch board at 2 AM because he woke up and couldn't remember what city he was in! As you can guess, he traveled A LOT, weekly most of the time.
