Have you ever boycotted a product due to a moral issue?

I guess that I have been living under a rock because I didn't know anything about any of these boycotts! Why do so many people boycott WalMart? Not trying to stir up anything...just curious.

I don't "boycott" any companies, per se, but I do have companies that I have some big problems with, and I like to buy from other companies if at all possible. It's not that I think these companies are going to change because I'm not supporting them but rather that I'd rather give my money to companies that don't do the things these companies do. It's only two companies, but they're big ones. One is Wal-Mart, and the other I'd rather not say. :)

I try to be morally responsible with my shopping as much as I can without driving myself crazy. For example, if I want a Christian book, I buy it from a Christian bookstore rather than Barnes & Noble or Amazon because I want the Christian bookstores to stay in business. When I want organic food, I buy it from the health food store rather than my regular grocery store because I'd hate to see my favorite health food store go out of business.

Hope the other company isn't Disney. :earseek: ;)

Your shopping theory sounds great. Would be great if more people did that too.

I should add, on the flip side, I don't think I would necessarily go out of my way to purchase a product simply because the company supported a charity/organization I supported either.

As I discussed on here before,I boycott andything by Foo Fighter as they are and support AIDS denialists..Aids denialsts are groups that deny AIDS exists or that HIV causes AIDS. Generally they blame the victims, accusing them of drug taking, and plenty of other nasty things. They also encourage people that test positive for the HIV virus to have unprotected sex,as no such disease really exists
I'll have to buy more American Girl Dolls now

Oh my gosh. Really? I had no idea there were groups like that? Why on earth would they want to support that?

For me it depends on the company. I have been known to go out of my way to make a purchase to support a company - within reason that is.

In third grade I boycotted Coke because someone told me it had cocaine in it. I drank Sprite instead. I showed them.

I absolutely have boycotted a few things/companies and the boycotts DID work for the few I chose to be involved with in the past.
You are right in that alot of the boycotts people call for do not work...but like I said, the few I have chosen HAVE worked and I now shop there and or buy their products once again. After signing petitions etc on 2 of them and saying we will not purchase the products anymore until they pull their support or whatever the issue is, the 2 companies of which I speak actually sent an email and or a letter in the mail to me asking/hoping we will try them again.
I do not want to disclose names, though...

Everyone has different beliefs and we can't fault one another for standing up for what we do believe...after all, this IS the United States. :wave2:

We do not buy Domino's Pizza; their founder does donate to anti-abortion groups.

I do not boycott big stores like Walmart, but I do support independent retailers and locally owned shops when I can. I would rather shop at a local bookshop for example, than buy from Barnes & Noble. I love B&N, but I want the small retailer to survive too.

We do not buy ANY Proctor and Gamble products. I look on any item I buy if I don't know what company it is from and if it says Proctor and Gamble I don't buy it.

Personally, I just choose not to shop there because they are huge and when they come into a town, they have a tendency to run the competition out of business. I try to support as many local stores as possible, though they really aren't many in my town to begin with. For the most part, I'm forced to travel an hour to shop (besides grocery shopping and a few things here and there) and I support the little guy more often than not and I support the mall and such for clothing. I hate Walmart's clothing, the quality is hideous and it's actually more expensive than the clothing is in the mall. At the mall though, you have to shop for the deals via sales, and/or clearance. They're constantly getting new inventory in, so what's on the shelf, must be reduced to get it out of there. That's not so in the case of Walmart.

Like I said earlier, if they sold something that I couldn't find elsewhere, I certainly would never cut off my nose to spite my face. Is that the way that expression goes? LOL

For the poster who wouldn't drink Coke and switched to Sprite!

Can I ask why not? I remember a P+G boycott many years ago and wonder if it's for the same reason

Why is that?

Me too and I thought it was false, but maybe this is something else?

Yes, I won't eat Dominos Pizza.

Same here. Besides the fact that I don't like their pizza, I do not like the groups who they contribute to.

Wow, there must be a lot of products that you don't buy.

I don't buy any product that I know:
1. Supports sweatshop- like conditions
2. Supports Republicans

There was a time when my Mom wanted to boycott Dole pineapple - but then we reminded her that Bob wasn't one of those Doles!
