Have you ever been suspended

Question: From the company's perspective, what's the benefit to "suspending" an employee? I manage a staff of 8 and believe me, I need every one of them on the job at all times; covering a sick leave or even planned vacation days leaves us scrambling. The last thing I would do is send any of them home temporarily because our overall productivity would suffer. If the offence was that egregious I'd be terminating them and interviewing candidates for an immediate replacement. Thoughts?

my staff were all union (in a right to work state)-so a termination, if it could even occur, took FOREVER. suspensions without pay were almost unheard of-suspension with pay were also rare but often served as a means to get the staff member out of the work site in order for management to have the opportunity after an egregious act to investigate and document for a personnel action.

From an HR perspective- you suspend someone when you can't fire them yet. We suspended an employee when he was arrested, but we could not fire him until he was convicted. Same thing if you were investigating an employee for something. Say you thought an employee was embezzling money. If you fire them, and the employee turns out to be innocent, hello lawsuit! So, you suspend them while you conduct your investigation. If the employee is innocent, no harm no foul. Guilty? Fire them.

Our labour laws are a little different. With the possible exception of union contracts and identifiable-group discrimination, you can terminate anybody any time for any cause or no cause as long as the appropriate government-mandated severance is paid (or length of working notice in lieu of severance). My company has cut a cheque and had people out the door within the hour. One instance was for public urination on one of our job sites - low key I thought you might get a kick out of that one! ;)

It is funny how different things are triggers for different people. I probably fit what you describe here as a "perfect person." I am not perfect, but we do have a handle on our finances and we have been married almost 20 years with no major issues in our relationship.

However, my kids are not uber bright with the potential to get full scholarships into the best schools in the country. I have one child with some rather severe learning disabilities. He will probably not even go to a traditional 4 year college. My other two are capable of going to a 4 year school but aren't the greatest test takers and will be fairly "average" in their grades rather than stellar. But they are good kids and I am proud of them anyway.

I think on the DIS and other places, people post only the things that make them look exceptional. I am guilty of that too sometimes.

Believe very little of what you read.

hey Jim, Its just everyone often comes across like you, good boys who never been in trouble, no cc debt, perfect family, model employee, also never telled a lie, never been tempted sexually and all the goodie stuff that you are. I was just trying to make a post to show we all are not is good as you, and listen to this Jim, I also been arrested and spent time in Jail

I work in banking/finance. There isn't suspension, just outright firing. I've never been. I have seen a few people led off in hand cuffs for siphoning off funds.

:lmao:

Oh, and I was only ever suspended in high school. Never at work. :)

There was a guy at work that probably should have been suspended a few times but for some reason he was golden. :confused3 He took 3 hour breaks where he couldn't be found. Smoke breaks that would stretch through lunch, come back and then make an announcement, "I'm going to lunch.". We'd shake our heads and laugh about it.

He was a funny guy. Funny and explosive personality. You could hear his phone calls all over the office. Then he'd come around and tell everyone what it was he was yelling/arguing on the phone about. :rotfl: When it was quiet for any length of time, people would start asking where he was. Then it would be, "Oh yeah. Smoke break".

That office would've been so dull without him. But then we had a drama lama diva boss.... Good times. Good times.

Hey, don't put that out there without the back story! :ssst:

I've never been suspended, but I have been in a tense situation regarding some travel expenses I had for a conference. Granted everything I did had been approved by my immediate supervisor so I thought it was cool. Come to find out she was a complete loon and almost took me down with her!

, I also been arrested and spent time in Jail

:scared1: and here we thought we knew you inside and out Jason. Okay, spill and trust me, details better not be left out, ya hear? Okay, from the beginning.

I was suspended at my college job for selling cigarettes to an under-age person as part of a 'sting' operation.
I've never been so embarrassed and upset in my life. Also, never not carded another sole again!

Turned out for the best-I had a week off to focus on school and catch up on my classes.

from work ?

yes :smokin:

Yep. I was 16 years old and a cashier at the local grocery store. We didn't normally count our drawers, the cash office did that. One day I went into work and they told me that I was suspended because the food stamps (this was in the days before EBT when we had actual books of food stamps) in my drawer were $40 short the last time I had worked. :confused3 I didn't even remember having any orders where I took food stamps that day. There was no way for me to dispute anything or know what happened for sure. I was off the schedule for the next 3 days that I was supposed to work. Really, for a teenager? I had the weekend off, woo hoo! :goodvibes After that they required me to count my drawer before I left at night (which was dumb that everyone didn't have to do it anyway), and guess what? I was never off by more than a couple of pennies for the rest of the time I worked there. Thrity years later, I still think someone in the cash office was a thief.

Basically yes.. I still can't believe it but here goes..

I was working at a smallish airline. I took my vacation time, went on a disney cruise for 7 days, got mixed up with lovely Hurricane Jeanne. We were basically rescued at sea on the Friday night and put up at the Swan for the night, was due to fly out Saturday afternoon.. I called in to MAKE SURE all was still a go, was told absolutely... we are sending it as a rescue flight, which is empty, but to pick up all the passengers. (myself, and my family included).. I was due to work late Sunday.

So... Saturday Morning get up bright and early as Jeanne is rolling in, call Reservations, yes flight is leaving now, you are still on for 2pm, I have this feeling that I couldn't shake.. Sure enough, I call back before leaving for MCO, flight isn't leaving as it won't make it before MCO shuts down... Husband and myself call EVERY rental car agency as we need a mini van for 8, get one, he takes off, I pack up everyone.. By this time it is basically early evening and the weather is getting :scared1:.. In retrospect, we should have stayed put, but we had no experience with hurricanes, and wanted to get OUT.. So we plan out to drive to Newark and drop the mini-van there and fly home.. We basically drove ALL night.. I call MY boss explaining I couldn't make it, as really they left me stranded, as well as 160 odd passengers as well (they said it wouldn't be until MOnday before they could fly in to MCO), she said ok I will replace you)..

In Newark, on OUR flight home is the CEO of the Company, how ironic is that?? Now I am a total greaseball, supposed to be dressed clean, but feel like a dirty mess.. He is super nice, and apologetic..

On Monday when I arrive to work, I get called in and my supervisor has paperwork, and says I hate to do this, but this is a letter with a suspension, because although you called in, you are a NO SHOW:eek:.. She felt horrible, and I was absolutely floored.. I said how about the whole flight who is STILL stuck in Florida because you abandoned them there, when ALL other carriers rescued their passengers. I signed the letter, resigned two weeks later.. I couldn't morally stay in a company that worked that way.. She really begged me to go to the union, but I just wouldn't do it.. They did go bankrupt about 5 months later, so..

I got suspended once (many years ago, when I was young and stupid) for getting drunk in my lunch hour  Had to undergo a disciplinary hearing but I got off because I was on medication at the time that my Doctor said may have accelerated the effects of the alcohol. I quit right after anyway :rolleyes1
