Have you ever actually eaten Chestnuts roasted over an open fire??

We had some over an open fire just last weekend. My DH just had to try them with we were shopping at Old St. Charles. I thought they were just ok. My DH thought that they tasted like potato but with just a little sweetness.

Yes, I have. My uncle roasts them in a hopper he has for his fireplace. I thought it was so cool. But I didn't like the taste or texture of the roasted chestnuts. :crazy2:

Yes, as a kid.

They taste like acorns.

Which I also tried as a kid.

Yuck to both!

Me too.....I can still taste the acorns...kinda bitter!

Nope, but have had them roasted in an oven at home - delicious, but too much work. I have had them from the jar (already peeled and yummy - instant gratification). And best of all were the chestnuts I got from a cart on the street in Paris. Ah, what I wouldn't do for some of those right now :)

I Love chestnuts!
I bake them and peel them and use them in our stuffing.

I only eat them when I'm in NYC near Rockerfeller Center looking at the tree. It's a tradition. I love the smell of them.

That's where I tried them! Won't eat them again. I finished the whole bag even though I thought they were gross, but my BIL paid for them so I couldn't throw them out.

People eat acorns? I would never think to eat an acorn. I've have eaten a chestnut though and I won't make that mistake again.

Never roasted them over an open fire, but I love them boiled! They are much moister & not as dry & mealy tasting. They do need to be pierced even when boiling. I rinse them off real well before boiling. :)

Did you go to Georgetown? When I lived in Denver I went to Georgetown every December to get in the Christmas spirit - I just love the old Victorian atmosphere.
But to answer your question NEVER tried the chestnuts. We had a chestnut tree inthe neighborhood as a kid I can just couldn't bring myself to think of those little things as a food source.
YES, we did go to Georgetown! It is a small world after all! The Christmas Market there is going on this weekend as well. We had a wonderful breakfast in a quaint little restaurant called the Happy Cooker. They had the absolute BEST hot spiced cider I've ever had. We stayed the night and it was COLD. When I say cold, I mean the high that day was 5 degrees and that was at midnight. It was great! We love to go there and really get into the Christmas spirit.

Ha! I just bought some to try...my DS and I were watching the food channel and everyone was raving how good they were! Now I don't know if I want to go to the trouble. lol

I was so excited to try them. We were at the Spanish Steps in Rome and it seemed like such a romantic thing to do, such a festive atmosphere and BOY WERE THEY NASTY. They were mushy and truly did taste like acorns. (Yep, I tried acorns too!) What a letdown!

I had roasted chestnuts every autumn when I lived in Paris. As soon as it starts getting cold outside the street vendors appear, roasting chestnuts on metal drums. You can smell it all over Paris, absolutely wonderful. :goodvibes

I tried them at the GF a few years ago and thought they were terrible.

I love Chestnuts!!! I've been eating them since I was a little kid. 2 of my kids like them too. We were in heaven on out trip last year...when they served them, FREE, at the Grand Floridian.

I boil them for 20 minutes.

Just curious....for those that use the oven, How long do you bake them for?

Jess

I haven't, but I walk by the chestnut vendor every day on my way to university (just outside the British Museum.) Its the same group of men who sell the hot dogs, so I avoid them with that association in my mind! :crazy2:
