Have we reached the saturation point?

Best retort to crap like that is to smile and ask how long it took them. When they stammer about how they didn't run but, you know, could have done it, you smile again and finish with "maybe, possibly, but you didn't. I did."
This guy HAD run the marathon. We didn't ask him his time because we were both pretty sure he wanted to brag to us about how OMGSOFAST he was. Didn't give him the chance, just said "have a good one" and walked away. :teeth:

I would have considered asking about his time, offered my condolences for his having failed to win and asked him if he would ever run it again since he clearly couldn't win it. popcorn::

I've always had a retort ready in my back pocket but never had to use it. Goes something like "Why would you spend $80 to only run for 16 minutes...at least get your money's worth"
(it's dumb, and I don't actually agree with the sentence, but one day I'll use it and hope someone blankly stares at me when I say it)

I will say that my first rundisney experience with another runner was in the bus line for the 5k. And we started chatting with a fellow wearing a Dopey bib with an A corral on it. He didn't have to say he was fast or athletic...the bib spoke for itself. Somewhere at some point in his race career he got a good POT to get there. And he acted like us deciding to run our first disney 5k was the best thing in the world. He never boasted or tried to belittle us for "only running a 5k" or for talking about trying to decide if we had time to stop for characters or not.
So I just want to thank that guy for being a good dude.

:rotfl2: I'll do that next time I run into some jerk!

That's awesome.

I don't remember the details, but after one of the major races (Boston/NYC/Chicago, etc.) the winner was being interviewed and talked about how the people who ran 7 hour marathons were just as impressive. He was only on the course for 2 hours, but they had to spend so much more time out there.

I think that's a big difference between the really Elite runners and the "fast" people. The Elite runners that are placing and winning the big races always seem happy to have people involved in the sport. The "fast" people who are way faster than I will ever be, but probably won't actually win a major race, always seem to be a little snobby about it. I remember when I first started running I was reading a running message board and someone wrote that he didn't understand why slow people were running if they weren't going to actually compete. He was running 7 minute miles, which is incredibly impressive, but it's not like he's going to win Boston with that. Why the need to put down others to make yourself feel better?

My mom uses a variance of this every time she goes golfing.

I'm the same snarky person in real life as I am on the boards ;) The corral jumper didn't like me at Star Wars this year!

Sometimes I'm nice as well.

I've had mean things said to me at races and after races (I've posted about it before in my journals) and I've gotten better about not letting it get to me. Somedays are better than others.

RunDisney is for me as usually I find people are more like my mindset and I've found good friends this way.

I too will give away my oreos... and my applesauce...really anything in those boxes.....

So my running story. I was doing the BAA 10k which is a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon. I have no chance of ever BQing, but its a good race, albeit it faced paced, so I use it for PoT. This year (2016) I had undiagnosed tendonitis, and i've been doing run/walk intervals to still complete my training. My friend and I pulled over to the side for our walk interval, and I was hurting a little.

Someone ran by and was cheering us on, like "you can do it ladies! Keep going!" my friend and I were like well...that was both...nice and condescending at the same time? He cheered for no one else, just us on our walk interval....

I don't think condescending.....just probably unaware that some people use a run/walk method. I call out to people--runners/walkers/et al. I don't presume to know their style, just want to give a word of encouragement. Hope that's what he meant.

that's what I thought too....but then my friend said something and she was upset and insulted because he only singled us out as we were walking.

@Ariel484 with the mic drop back there!

Add me to the list of people who would have never done more than a 5k if it weren't for RunDisney! I am just grateful that I am able to keep running and there is a place like this where I can come and talk about running. As long as someone isn't hindering myself or others from running the race, I don't care if you want to dress like a character or stop and take a picture with one or ride a ride.
