Have some questions with the Wii game---Walk it Out

I broke out this game recently (bought it back in January and has basically sat on the shelf since) LOL I used it for a few minutes a couple weeks ago and used it again this morning.

Here's what I'm wondering.....I've read the manual but I don't think I'm getting it. I walked for the first two songs and noticed these little circles along the path. Some were blue with nothing in them, some had a picture of a little house, etc. What are these? Am I supposed to click on them?

What else am I supposed to do besides just walk? I read in the manual and they were talking about unlocking different things....how do I unlock stuff and what's it for?

Any help on this game would be appreciated!!!
