Reference the bolded quote...
Any upgrade to a ticket must be done within 14 days of its first use, even if it is a non-expiring ticket, so you could not upgrade a ticket that you bought three years ago UNLESS it is still unused. In that case, you could use it once and then upgrade within 14 days.
I think the poster meant what you're saying. The exampe of buying a ticket 3 years ago, didn't use it then. Used it to get into the parks now, upgraded now, and would get the current gate value credited.
bevis... We have not done this yet, but this is what I expect.
We bought DS's kid's ticket for 199.95. A 7 day base ticket, from UCT through the Mousesavers link.
This superthread about tickets by a ticket-selling CM tells me that the current gate price of that ticket is 201, but that doesn't include the tax. So I'm heading over to disneyworld.com...where I find that the total of the current price of the 7 day base kid's ticket is $214.07.
So when DS uses his ticket, when we go to upgrade his ticket, it will be "bridged" so that it is now worth $214.07.
If we upgrade him to a 10 day base ticket, we'll pay the difference between that 214.07 and $223.65 (which is the current price of a 10 day base kid's ticket including tax). We will have saved 14.12. We will have paid 209.53 instead of 223.65.
Now if we decide we love WDW so much we'll come back more inside of a year, and we upgrade him to a normal AP (with
DVC pricing), that normal DVC AP at this time costs $366.36. We'll pay the difference between the 214.07 that his ticket is worth and the $366.36 (which includes tax). Just like the other example, we will have saved that 14.12, as we will have paid a total of 322.24 instead of 336.36.
If there is a ticket price increase this summer, our savings will be more.
