I was on the DreamsUnlimited website searching for cruises sailing from ports closer to home. I seen a few from NYC and wondered if any DISers have ever done a cruise to nowhere to get a short cruise fix?
:)

Yep, two summers ago 10 of us girlfriends (left hubbies and kids behind!) took a two night cruise to nowhere on the new Carnival Victory out of NYC. It was a great ship (nothing like Disney, but great in its own way). We wound up sailing down off the coast of Maryland. We booked 4 cabins and just added the total price up and divided by 10. We only paid about $89 per person including gratuities (all inside cabins). I checked the prices for the Carnival Triumph this year doing a two nighter and the price is substantially higher...about $299 pp.

It was a great two nights and they even had formal night!!! I have pictures of the beautiful pre 9/11 New York skyline with the twin towers and they mean alot more to me now. Sailing under the Verazzano Narrows bridge was awesome too!!

My in laws did one and it was terrible. It was a Carnival cruise on an older ship (MIL referred to it as a barge). The plumbing in their room broke on the first night and they waded through three inches of water for the rest of the cruise. The ship was full so they couldn't change cabins. The water was really rough, and the ship being older didn't have the modern stabilizers taht they build in now, and MIL was ill the entire time. The food, though plentiful, was terrible, and some pax came down with food poisoning.

The experience was SO bad, they'll never cruise again.

I went a few years ago with a few friends on a "bachelors party" cruise. We went from Manhattan on the Royal Empress up to Martha's Vinyard and back. We left on Friday afternoon and arrived back in NYC on Sunday very early in the morning. The accomodations were nothing like DIS, as is expected. The room we had was an interior one near the bow and you could hear the waves lapping at the front of the ship.

I thought the food was good, not up to DIS standards, and there was plenty of it. The most memorable thing is being constantly swarmed by crew selling drinks and taking drink orders. I must have been approached once every 2 minutes. They certainly pushed the drinks.

For a one time getaway, I'd say it's worth it. I certainly wouldn't replace a DIS vacation with it though.
