I have the canon 60d with 17-55 2.8 and 15-85 ef-s. I also have the 430 exii speedlite but am interested in clean iso's for vacation and family pictures in low light so I was looking at selling my gear and getting the canon 5d mark iii with the kit 24-105 to start then getting the 70-200mm f4is and 50mm 1.4. I was curious if thats overkill for my needs of family photography mostly trips to disney and school events. Are there any other suggestions?

Your current camera is able to capture good pictures in low light.

Are you trying for indoor sports venues or something else?

Your 17-55 2.8 and a 50 1.4 are good starts. I'd also look at the 85 1.8 and many people love their Sigma 30 1.4.

Selling all your stuff won't get your half of what you need for the 5d. But, I've purchased camera gear for less developed rationale, so I know what you are saying ;)

I know but I do not have the 50mm 1.4 or the 70-200 f4IS. They would be bought later on. I am going back to Disneyland and San Diego this time and not world so I do not know what focal lengths or shooting environments I will encounter. I also always get my little ones so I think a 50mm 1.4 and 85mm will be too much reach for two kids and the scenery around. That is why I thought of going with the 5d3 and 24-105 only and a 270 ex ii. If you have any other suggestions then I am all EARS ;)

You are the only one who can determine whether or not it's overkills. The 5DmkIII can shoot in the dark with a fast lens and the ISO performance is amazing. It leaves the T2i/T3i/60D/7D in the dust noise wise. And if that's your bottom line and you have the cash then it might be a good purchase for you. But only you can decide that.

For what it's worth, I've been a crop only shooter and was determined to stay that way. Sure, I lusted after the 1Dx when it was released, but there's no way I could swing that without a winning lottery ticket. But after playing with a 5DmkIII I'm getting one as soon as funds allow since it is priced within reach for me. I shoot a lot of low light and it's mostly about the ISO range and performance at this point. But I also make money at this.

So far the 5d3 has min shutter speed settings better acceptable iso range image comparision during playback and i am faster with its ergonomics than the 60d but i would be giving up my 2.8 lens and adding a lot of weight and not sure if thats too much for the up coming trip. Ideally at some point i would like to go pro just not now.
