Haunted Mansions becoming politically correct ??

I don't know. I'll reserve knee-jerk reactions for when it actually happens.

But I do like the statement that they are just trying to take some of the variability out of the current experience. Sure, most of the CM's are pretty good, but having standards makes sure that we all get an equally good (or poor I suppose) level of entertainment.

How does he know that they aren't going to be saying "Drag your wretched bodies to the dead center of the room"?

You know, in general, I think the level of society has generally gone downhill in the last few years. By that, I mean, that society in general is far more willing to say or do inappropirate things for the "reaction". There is a general loss of propriety.

Well, folks, CMs are people too. If society in general is losing its ability to determine what is appropriate and what is not, then perhaps it stands to reason that CMs are too. Scripting things, telling your employees what they should and should not say, is a way to "control" the experience for the guest.

We here on the DIS are very quick to post a negative encounter with a CM. There is all sorts of uproar, commiserration, advice about what to do, who to call, how to handle it.

Disney is obviously listening, and is scripting to improve their guest experience, to avoid guests encountering the CM who says "There's nothing I can do about it" or "What do you want me to do? I'm on break". Do I think the world has become crazily PC in its reaction to "offenses"? Yes I do. Used to be that if someone said something offensive, you told them to shut the "heck" up, moved on and lived your life thinking that person was a *******.

That's not the way the world works anymore, society in general says more inappropriate things, people are also more easily offended by inappropiate things, and thus, we have scripting to control the situation. It's a vicious cycle. Now, if someone says something offensive, there are lawyers, the ACLU and numerous other people involved who are trying to get money to soothe the offended's "emotional distress".

I can't help but think we are bringing some of this on ourselves.

A good example of Disney changing for Political Correctness is at Pirates of the Caribbean . Instead of the scene where the pirate is chasing the woman in circles they changed it to the pirate chasing a woman holding a tray with a turkey on it.

While it is a small change. It was just done to make a few people who were insulted by the scene. Here old time Disney was making fun of one of the core basics of humanity. Men chasing women and women running from men. This has been going on since Adam and Eve.

I personally find these little sayings by the host fun and creative. Just like the sayings that are at the Jungle Cruise ride. I don't blame Disney for not wanting their guides saying something offensive, however, they shouldn't stifle creativity. Imagination and creativity is the core of Disney. If not then they are going to have a bunch of bored young people going through the script that has been approved.

HM is my favorite ride and I am still podering what people are finding offensive????

I guess I don't really get it either. What is offensive about HM? Could someone please point it out it me? Are guests offended about being told to drag their 'wretched bodies' to the center of the room, or are they afraid it is offending dead people? Makes no sense to me. Whoever did the complaining to WDW needs to get a life, (no pun intended).

It's just like the Robot Buses. I LOVED the interaction with the bus drivers and we had some great rides with drivers that told jokes, had trivia games and gave pointers for the parks. Now, all we get is the canned announcement and the music, heaven forbid that the driver says something not Disney approved.

I was always under the impression that part of being a CM at Disney was getting to perform-even if you're driving a bus, you're on-stage. Even more so for the CM's that work at HM and other attractions. I hate to see Disney making everything so generic that it takes away the creativity of the CMs.

I agree! Plus, lets face it. Are all Disney movies politically correct? They are not...Do I care no! They use words at times I don't want my kids to use and I just tell my kids "you can't say that"...I mean lighten up everyone, right????

This has to be a joke or somebody pulling Mr. Hill's chain.

Enough guests have complained because the butler/maid says "dead center of the room" that Disney feels the need to spend money on writing a script and implementing it, as well as sending the CMs to acting school?

The article is a bit confusing though. He says word out of WDI is that it's being done in response to guest complaints, then he says "his guy" in WDI says that's not the reason. Are there two WDI's now?
