Haunted Mansion Graveyard Scene too Bright

Has anyone noticed in the last couple of years that the graveyard scene in Haunted Mansion looks like it has gotten brighter (more lights)? The last few times we've ridden it, it seems like that and the extra lights make the scrim (fabric in front of the animatronics) show up as to where in previous years I don't remember seeing it. It seems to be a light just as your coming around the corner from where the dog is and coming up on the singing busts.

Also, haven't really been able to hear the piano music in the black widow scene.

Was thinking about e-mailing Disney with my comment but was curious if anyone else had noticed.

I had assumed the scrim was a new addition. I didn't really notice the lighting level.

The scrim is not a recent addition. Over the years, I've noticed it being more visible on some visits and other times, it's virtually invisible as it should be. Lighting level certainly plays a factor, but I also think it shows up more when it's in need of a refurb. One visit I noticed that it was extremely visible due to being dirty and torn in spots.

The last time we visited D.W. my husband and I couldn't see a thing in the mansion. Maybe they have received complaints from seniors with failing eyesight. :goodvibes

I've visited both WDW and DL Mansions, and the WDW Mansion is definitely darker, overall.

I found it very dark... and I was 28 when I visited a couple of weeks ago! I struggled to see a lot in HM.

I also find the light levels made a few things difficult to see any good detail (Peter Pan's Flight being one I can remember, and POTC...) I spent a lot of time wondering if my eyes have got really screwed up, because everyone raves about those rides, and I struggled to see things well enough to really take stuff in.

I have always felt is has been to dark and wish they would make it brighter so you could see more then what was right infront of your vehicle.

It's not just you. My family and I have all commented on how Peter Pan's Flight and Pirates have gotten darker over the years. We don't know if it is to discourage videoing or what, but it is much darker. You can't see the smoke coming out of the chimneys in the London scene on Peter Pan's Flight and you really can't make out many of the details on Pirates anymore. I wish they would go back to making it a little brighter.

Glad it's not just me. Neither were worth a second ride because I simply couldn't see enough!

Ive ridden both DL and WDW versions in past year and they seem much darker than I remember when I was younger. Of course it didn't help that I had my sunglasses on for more than half the ride at DL in July and was verbally complaining that the scenes needed to be turned on before I realized I forgot to swap out my glasses with my sunglasses. I'm pretty sure my DS4 thought I was a moron.

Doesn't ruin it for me. The ride could kick me in the nuts while riding and I'll still ride them at least once every trip. But I'm nostalgic like that (nostalgic in the rides not being racked).

One major thing to consider is that if you visit HM during the daytime, your eyes must become accustomed to the interior lighting in relation to the bright daylight (especially sunlight.) This physical adjustment is called "dark adaptation," and typically takes between 20 and 30 minutes to reach its maximum.

That means that if you have not been inside the attraction for 20+ minutes, your eyes are still adjusting to the low-level lighting.

This also accounts for at least part of the reason many like to ride HM after dark.

I wear relatively dark sunglasses while outside, so maybe I adjust a little better. I have never noticed the rides being "too dark." I also never knew there was a scrim in front of the graveyard scene, so maybe my eyes aren't so good.

I hope the imagineers aren't reading this and getting ideas! :lmao:

I must have good eyes because recently I've been able to see the scrim every time we ride. I rarely complain but HM is my favorite and the scrim is admittedly a little distracting...

I think it might be because it is cheaper to dim down the lights than clean and refurb. If it's darker you don't see how some things are getting worn or shabby.

Yes!!! DH pointed this out the last time we were on HM a few months ago. He wanted to know if the scrims were new in the graveyard scene or if the lighting was off. I'll tell him about this thread so he will know it is not just him!:lmao:

I figured HM was supposed to be dark so it adds some mystery to the visuals. There are some things you can "almost see", leaving a bit to the imagination.

It's also the reason I see things on every visit that I've never noticed before.:earsboy:

Isn't the Haunted Mansion supposed to be worn and shabby? ;)

I think that the comment about people out of the bright sunlight sometimes is a good one. Plus some people have better night vision than others. Mine isn't real good so many of the rides seem pretty dark to me but I'm used to it.

I noticed the scrim for the first time last week! Thought it was something new they added. Noticed a lot of wrinkles in it that looked like they could've straightened it out more towards the end of the graveyard scene.

The last time I rode Peter Pan, I found it to be TOO bright, resulting in the walls and ceiling being clearly visible and detracting from the immersion/suspension of disbelief.

I think Robo's point about having time for your eyes to adjust is likely the reason for differing perceptions of the lighting levels. I doubt they consciously adjust the brightness from one day to the next.
