Hats

I suppose it's a sign that I'm getting older, but I see more and more men and boys wearing their hats at the breakfast/lunch/dinner table. I was raised (and the Navy reinforced it) that it is very bad manners for a male to wear a hat while seated at the table.

Am I wrong?

I guess it'a a sign I'm getting older too, George. I've always thought it was rude to wear a hat at the table (for males and females).

I'm with the two of you. I also think a hat should be removed when entering a building, and especially when seated at a table, for the pledge of allegiance, etc.

I seem to be one of the few people who places their hand over their heart whenever the National Anthem is played, too.

This is grinningghost's daughter. I am only 14 years old, and I still think hats are rude to wear at the table, males or females, so it's not a sign of aging.

I don't often wear a hat, but when I do I take it off when going indoors. I'd never even think of wearing one at the dinner table.

I'm with you, Pam, my hand is over my heart. And if the rendition is true to the tune, I sing out loud, too. My kids are embarrassed by this. Too bad, huh?

No one sits at my table with a hat on. I don't care if you are having a bad hair day.

or caps etc. But I had one on a few months ago and went to MIL's for dinner. She yelled at me. Normally I would never wear one to a meal!

Y'know, I'm curious how this custom got started? I'm not too fond of hats at the table, either, but it also doesn't bother me too much -- especially if it's a cute hat at WDW . I'm just curious why it's rude to wear hats at the table. Anyone have any info on the origin of this custom?

DSs do not wear hats at the table when I am around, either at my home or at WDW. Can't do much about DH, though. He loves his baseball caps and doesn't understand the idea of bad manners. He needs a concrete reasons to remove it .... anyone have it? I guess a sign of respect is not good enough...
And if I were ever to wear a hat during the National Anthem, it would be off. I put my hand over my heart. And I don't understnd why people have to start cheerig and hollering before the song is over!

Here is a neat little fact, regarding wearing hats indoors. Do y'all remember a man by the name of Paul 'Bear' Bryant? He believed in the fore-mentioned rule to the extent that he would remove his hat in a domed stadium. This is true, no lie. Just thought I'd mention it.

Funny story.......hubby wears a hat ALL the time, and often forgets he has it on.

We were at my folks house and at lunchtime hubby came in, sat down WITH his hat on. My father went ballistic, ranting and raving that men should always remove their hats at the table.

Hubby said "Sorry SIR, I FORGOT it was on my head!"



I THINK that happens a lot to other men.
Don't you sometimes forget you're wearing a hat?

Hats are to be removed as you walk inside, unless you are female. The only exception to this is military and law enforcement. You are to be "covered" if you are carrying firearms. Absolutely no hats at the table.

Bum Phillips was the same way when he coached the team formerly known as the Oilers. You would never see him wearing his stetson in the Astrodome or any other indoor facility. Interestingly enough, Phillips was an assistant coach under Bryant when he was Head Coach at Texas A&M. He was offered a job at Alabama when Bryant became Head Coach there, but Bum wanted to stay in Texas.
