Hats on Rides

I'd like to wear a baseball cap on our next visit. Do any rides require that you remove your hat? And if, they don’t require it, which rides have been problematic for hat wearers?

I’ll have my hair in a ponytail looped through the hat and really don’t want to be taking it on and off (my hat hair is particularly horrendous).

You will have to remove your hat for Soarin'. It sounds like the hat isn't too likely to blow off if your hair is threaded through it, but I have seen a number of lost hats next to the Racers tracks and the occasional lost hat underneath Screamin'. CMs do not make you take your hat off for those rides though. I personally take my hat off anytime I'm concerned it could be blown off or that my hat might be impeding the view of someone behind me.

You'd be surprised what rides can make your hat fly off. I lost a pair of ears on Mr Toads Wild ride! Luckily I was able to get the ears back but I never thought I'd lose it. I'd just be prepared to take it off for most rides. Even when I don't wear a hat my hair is a mess because of all the wind from the rides.

I've started practicing my french braid. I'm hoping with a good braid and lots of hairspray my hair will look ok.

Even if they don't tell you to remove it, not doing so on the more adventurous rides may cause you to lose it. Heck, my son lost a cool hat on Pirates during the first drop!

But for the quick reaction of someone behind us who grabbed it, my husband would have lost his baseball cap on Pirates. And my daughter lost a pair of ears on Gadget's Go Coaster. It could happen anywhere.

My mom lost her baseball cap on Splash (WDW) during the big drop. She told the ride operator as she got off in case it would mess up the ride in some way, and a supervisor nearby gave her a voucher for any hat up to $40. That was definitely Disney magic, and mom teared up right away from the unexpectedly kind gesture.

On many rides they'll say (or the recordings will say) to hold on to hats, glasses, and loose items. I don't think they actually make you remove them on any rides, but I always remove hats on any fast moving coasters because I've heard stories of people getting bruised from a hat hitting them in the face on a coaster, and I would feel terrible if I accidentally hurt someone. I also remove them for IJA because I know the track sensors are really sensitive and dropped items often shut down the ride.

The only time I've actually lost a hat, I wasn't wearing it. It was inside a (mostly) zipped pocket of a backpack, and the backpack was tucked away at my partners' feet, and the hat still somehow came loose.

When I went on Indiana Jones, right after it opened, I lost a baseball cap I was wearing. We told lost & found, and Disneyland actually mailed the hat back to me a couple weeks later!

Hubby lost a baseball hat on Splash. It was a freebie from a baseball game, so not a big deal but I kept checking to make sure he didn't break the ride!

Splash Mtn. I lost a baseball hat on the drop about 8 years ago. My daughter was 7 at the time and still gets anxious pre-ride making sure everything gets put away. I did not get any vouchers but did check lost and found. Filled out paperwork including a description and the fact that it “answers to Dave”. Never found.

The CMs working Goofy’s Sky School pretty much always tell us to put away hats and sunglasses. Just the other day we saw a baseball hat under the Matterhorn track. And of course we always are cautious on BTMRR (and the other two mountain rides), GotG, Incredicoaster, RSR, Silly Symphony Swings ...Come to think of it, I don’t believe we keep hats on for any of the rides just to be on the safe side.

I take off Kiddo's hat, but leave mine on for everything other than RSR. ... But mine fits seriously tight.

Thanks guys! Good points about the potential for a hat to hit another guest or mess up a ride, wouldn’t want either of those to happen.

This post is a good opportunity for this public safety reminder: when the ride safety announcement asks guests to remove hats and glasses, it is for guest safety, not to inconvenience anyone. I received a black eye on a ride when the guy in front of me refused to remove his baseball cap. His son asked him about it, but he said that it wasn't necessary. Well, when the cap flew off and the visor went right into my eye (and I was wearing hard contact lenses at the time), the pain was intense! While hats and glasses may seem harmless when they are on your own head, they turn into projectile weapons when they fly off into the faces of your fellow guests. (And sometimes they can shut down the entire ride if they fly off onto the ride track or cause other safety issues.) So if they can be removed and stored during the ride, please do so! Thank you!

I know Patrick Warburton asks everyone to remove hats (these little beauties...) for Soarin' but I don't understand why. There is no rushing wind, no one behind you whose view you will impede, and if they're worried about the chasm below why don't they ask you to remove loose shoes??

If Disney decided that it was safer to ask guests to remove hats/ear hats on Soarin', then their reasons for safety are more important than my need to know why. That ride was tested over and over (I have a friend who got to do CM ride testing -- over and over! -- she hates that ride now!). Disney is asking for a good reason (and the gusts of wind can be stronger depending on where you are seated) -- that's all I need to understand. And some guests do remove their shoes -- especially looser, older flip flops or looser children's sandals if their kids are the enthusiastic leg swinging type.

I lost my ears on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride too!! That was back in 1991 though

please take off your hat on Indiana jones! I had one fly into my face because the girl in front of me left it on. luckily I wasn't hurt, but it was scary seeing it fly at my head!

When we rode Gadgets this summer I noticed sooo many hats along the track .It is definitely a hat eating attraction. I take my hat off on most rides even though I wear my ponytail through it. I usually clip it through my purse so I don't lose it.
