Haters of Haunted Mansion

Okay, I'm just really curious. I know that every single time my parents MAKE me ride Haunted Mansion, I about have heart attacks. Usually I end up crying or whimpering. My last ride was actually the best one, but that was only because I was riding it with my DBF, and didn't want to seem like a total wimp. But I did not open my eyes for the entire ride, and spent a small portion with my hands over my ears. I just want to know if anyone else is this afraid of it. I just know that I get goosebumps just talking about it. So please, make me feel better about myself.

No offense but what do you get scared of? Lol

I think everyone feels something in the Mansion or well, it wouldn't be an attraction right? If you are afraid of looking silly check out Doombuggys.com and look at the stories behind it and the special effects that are in place, you might be able to see a side of the Mansion you can enjoy more. Really though, being scared IS the fun bit for me. :scared1:

I DON'T KNOOOOOOOW. All I know is that I will start hyperventilating at the thought of getting on. I hate things popping out at me for one thing, so that rules out the Attic. And I am mortally terrified at ghosts, so when you see the "hitchhiking ones"..rule me out. I also consider Madame Leota a ghost, so that rules that out. And I refuse to look up in the stretching room. I think the only part that doesn't bother me is the ballroom. But what can I say? 100% wimp and proud of it.

I understand, sorta. When I went on for the first two years, I couldn;t take it. Now, I can do basically the whole ride EXCEPT the grave yeard where ghosts pop up. I have to close my eyes then. Also in the stretching room, I can't stand because I'm clausterphobic so that part scares me.

Here's my advice: Go on a lot, so you get used to the sounds. Then, open your eyes for one scene each ride, starting with the parts you think are the least scariest. Once you get used to it, the scenes can be fascinating and sometimes hilarious. Tha's how I did it, and I now love the ride, when I used to hate it.

Good Luck and Happy Hauntings!

thanks for the tips, i'll DEFINITELY keep those in mind for next time. Oh, of course, I forgot to mention that last time I rode there was also a "spooky voice" going "I'm going to get you......Annie you are doomed"..........courtesy of DBF's little brother. Which made it a little better.

:faint: the room when you first go in, I guess that's the stretching room, is the only thing that bothers me because I am also claustrophic but from what I have been told from other DIS board members is that you can tell the CM and you can bypass that room. :moped:

It doesn't bother me at all but since it does you...I agree with this. Learn all you can about the ride. If you get to know it from a technical or a wow, that's amazing, how do they do that...point of view...you may not have the same fears.

A trick someone else posted that they do with their kids in the graveyard scene...When they pop up and scream at you, scream back! lol Not trying to make light of your fear...this really worked for them.

Myst

I don't have any tips unfortunately SoccerDog, different rides certaily seem to appeal to, or frighten people of all ages.

We took my daughter (now 13) to WDW in 1995 when she was about 3 1/2. The first ride we went on was the Great Movie Ride - she was absolutely terrified. To get her to go into ANY indoor attraction after that we had to bribe her - Winnie the Pooh stuffed animal for POC, etc. She was even scared on It's a Small World. I can't remember what bribe we used to get her on the Haunted Mansion, but she was ok on that ride. Go figure.

When DD and I revisit again in May I think we'll start off with Dumbo and work our way up to Small World

And totally off topic - I LOVE that dog! Is he yours? He looks so much like my dog, who i'm missing very much while i'm out of town taking care of my Mom who's recovering from major surgery.

Too bad....I adore the HM, see signature.

I hope it gets better for you!

He's not mine, mine's all black and a lab/chow mix. It's just a standard avatar, it's just on one of the last pages. But my old dog could do that trick, so I just had to get it.

As you can tell from my screen name, I'm not afraid of HM, I wish I could LIVE there!

This is a great idea, Myst! Thanx! We're taking our grandsons in Dec & if they seem like they can handle the dark parts (maybe helped by a glowstick or two) then I can teach them to scream back. That was the part that scared my son when he was little too - Oh, the ghosts popping up & screaming are in the attic, not the graveyard.

My two daughters won't go anywhere near it! So you've actually made ME feel better that we're not the only people who go to MK and avoid it like the plague! My DH and I both like it, but we' can't convince them to try for anything in the world. I appreciate hearing what you don't like about it.... and I'm NOT going to try to get them to ride it!

My youngest is reading over my shoulder - and she says ride a roller coaster instead!

I've only ridden HM once. I was 20 or 21. I got off the ride w/ a smirk and said "You've got to be kidding me. That was hilarious, not scary."

I'm a 28 year old woman, and while I love the HM, it was not always that way. It took me until I was about in my early 20's before I felt okay riding it. I also hate things that pop out at me and to this day, cannot attend local Halloween haunted houses and wax museums.

It doesn't matter what is popping out at me, whether it's cute and comical looking or downright gory. I just don't like being surprised.

Eventually I was able to handle the HM because of being stuck in it for about 20 minutes once while the ride broke down. It kind of desensitized me.

The graveyard scene still freaks me out a little. ;)

My DS14 still refuses to go in HM. For the life of me, I can't understand it, but there's something about those ghosts... :confused3

It is my dd (4)'s favorite ride at WDW. She said she wants to ride it 10 times when we go back next month. What can I say? She's born to two daredevil parents who are not scared of much. We told her prior to our last visit that the ghosts and villians pretend to be scary.

It is still one of my favority all time rides. I agree, the more you learn about how the ride was made, the less scary it is. Although, I always found it more playful than scary.

Close your eyes and hum the "It's a Small World" song - now that's scary. Just kidding, that's another favorite ride.

I'm uncomfortable in small spaces also, I usually look at the walls and try to figure which side will open first for a quick escape to the doom buggies. I find that if I stand on the edge of a crowd, I don't get as nervous.

I do so love the Haunted Mansion! We have purchased video ride-throughs of it (some in night vision), which you can purchase on eBay. Perhaps if you see the ride in Night-Vision, the creep factor will diminish.

There's also a soundtrack available of music & voices in the house, we use it for Halloween. Even the little kids seem to like it.

Of course, I'm probably biased, my SUV has a 'doombuggy' plate.

". . . 999 ghosts, room for 1 more . . . "

I rather found Haunted Mansion more like a cartoon. I guess you should skip the touring museum next to Medieval Times in Kissimee you can visit before the show. The devices in there are the real thing. It really creeped me out. :scared1:
