Hat etiquette at TS meals

Manners and Etiquette:

1) Informal hats and caps, ballcaps, etc - men and women
. . . remove them upon going indoors & restaurant
. . . carry them to table or hat rack
. . . some experts say remove at table even when eating outdoors
. . . unfortunately, it is becoming accepted in fast food eateries

2) Formal hat, fedora, tophat, etc - men
. . . same as #1

3) Formal hats, bonnets, etc - women
. . . proper to wear at table and while eating
. . . optional to remove while eating
. . . in either case, may wear indoors & through restaurant to/from table

4) Military
. . . men and women have different rules
. . . men *usually* do not wear indoors unless ceremonial or under arms
. . . women can wear at indoors and at most meals
. . . other times, they follow with men and remove
. . . other times, they don't follow with men and don't remove
. . . yes, the difference can get complicated to the casual observer

NOTE:
Most people do not understand when to not wear a hat.
Especially indoors.
Let alone hat customs, like men tipping/lifting the hat.
Or, removing when talking to someone, even outdoors.

I completely agree - and it drives me crazy when I am out for a nice meal and women are wearing baseball caps. Thankfully, MOST men have the common sense to take it off.

I think it is proper protocol to remove a hat anytime one sits down to eat a meal in a restaurant. I would make the exception with fast-food restaurants. :goodvibes

I agree that the hats should come off but I, personally, am only bothered by men in sleeveless shirts.

Enjoy your first trip, OP.

:)

I don’t wear hats so my comment is not from the pov of a hat wearer....but why does people wearing hats indoors and while eating bother people so much? I am not looking to start an argument i just want to 'get it'. It’s not like smoking or cussing in the sense that those actions have a direct effect on other people. Someone’s hat does not cause anything to happen to another person. So i just don’t see the problem. The hat is not going to blow smoke in my face or deliver inappropriate words to my kids ears.

Hmmm, that is a good question. I absolutely despise people wearing hats at dinner (fast food place or anywhere) BUT , I can't really expain why. Pet peave. The only reason I really have. Bothers me way more that the men leaving the toilet seat up LOL!! I would just love to knock the hat off of anyone I see wearing it while eatting. Don't know where the urge comes from, but I always refrain!;)

I totally agree. The standards to which I hold myself and the standards to which I hold others are markedly different. While I wouldn't want to wear a hat indoors, I don't care if the strangers at the table next to me do. However, men in sleeveless shirts really bother me too. They look undressed to me.

I'll bet there are many men who would not share that same opinion if it were a woman wearing a sleeveless shirt. :lmao:

(just kidding, I do agree with you)

What is the hat etiquette at TS meals in Disney...?

Is it sort of the same as outside The World where men are expected to remove their hats but women are not? How about girls?

What have you seen?

Hat etiquette should be universally the same, whether in The World or outside of The World.

With that said, I simply cannot get my dh to remove his hat at any restaurant in WDW. His hair gets all funky and stands up straight when he takes the hat off and his opinion is that his hat on his head is less offensive than his hat off of his head.

I still make my kids take their hats off at the table, regardless of what their father does.

I don't know if my perspective stems from a cultural, locational or generational difference, but I am surprised by the rigidity of a lot of the posters in this thread. I do not know the history of etiquette involving hats, but I understand that these rituals hold a place in today's society. Therefore, it probably would strike me as unusual if I saw a man wearing a baseball cap in formal setting, including the Disney signature restaurants. In casual restaurants, though, I wouldn't even notice the hat on anybody's head. I certainly wouldn't think anybody wearing a hat at Chef Mickey's somehow has poor manners.

If it makes you comfortable to continue the customs of removing your hat indoors, that's wonderful! But I urge everyone not to judge anybody who chooses not to. In many households around the country, this practice simply isn't taught anymore.

(And before it starts, I know 100 people will now come on this thread and write that they were sure to teach their male children to take their hats off at the table while they were in the womb. That's why I said "many." We can find anecdotal evidence to prove nearly any point, so that sort of rebuttal is useless to this discussion.)

It never ceases to amaze me when people want to apply the most stringent of etiquette rules to amusement park restaurants.

At the casual restaurants I have been to which is 50's Prime Time Cafe, Liberty Tree Tavern, Tony's Town Square, The Plaza, Chef Mickey's, Ohana and Fulton's Crab House, I would always wear my Toronto Maple Leaf hat and didn't think twice about it or that I was wrong for wearing it.

Agreed :thumbsup2

I also can't stand the tradition of formal nights on cruises. I'm on vacation, not at the office or a business meeting. All I want is to be comfortable.

Why would etiquette of any kind be suspended at Disney? How odd.

How odd?...lol

Well, let's put on our thinking caps.....

Where etiquette may normally dictate that you don't wear a hat during dinner at a sit down restaurant, I think the equation changes when you build a sit down restaurant IN AN AMUSEMENT PARK and expect that many of the diners have been in 90+ degree heat and blazing sun since rope drop.

I'm sure that you always return to your resort mid afternoon and shower and freshen up before going to dinner, but I'm guessing that many folks don't.

I would say that etiquette inside or outside Disney isn't suspended as much as etiquette at an amusement park and your nearby restaurants at home aren't the same.

Still "odd"?

1) There are many of origins of removing hats indoors and at meals.
2) When it comes down to it, removing a hat is a sign of respect.
3) Some people
. . . just do not have respect for others
. . . just do not have respect for themselves
4) Pretty plain and simple.

LOL....After a post like this the most shocking part is you could count to 4.

I respectfully disagree ;) - seriously, as you normally provide great information in your posts and are one of the more respected members of the DIS. However, I don't see leaving a hat on (and therefore, most likely keeping a very sweaty head concealed) as a sign of disrespect in this setting. Other settings, yes - but not in a theme park filled with children and people on vacation.

The lumping of everyone on the face of the earth who wears a hat to eat together and saying they have no respect for themselves or others is pretty darn extreme. And not just a little rude and condescending.

Amen! I could care less if people where hats are not. I would rather have a family all wearing hats, tshirts, and shorts eating quietly next to me than some family all dressed in polos or hillfigger:sad2: without hats, but the kids are running around wildly and the parents are talking on their cell phones. That would be disrespectful, not someone who doesn't want to remove their hat because their hair was all sweaty and out of shape. I mean really, don't we have bigger problems in this world to worry about than hat ettiquette. Good grief!
